I don't know how well the old bare aluminum paint scheme would work with the composites used in the 787.

Until they announced their new livery, I had wondered what AA's 787s would look like. A bare one wouldn't have been pretty:

Now I have a new curiosity, though. Why are they all white? As in, 787s in factories often seem to be neither bare composite like the one above, nor painted in their carrier's livery. Just plain white, with a banner taped onto each side with masking tape. I'm guessing the white must be a special coating that must be applied over the composite and before the full livery is painted, but I'm really not sure.

Good question. Could be a primer of sorts, or a protective coating. I think it'd be neat if they painted one to look like the old livery.
