So my 11 yr old daughter is becoming a car nut. We enjoy going to shows and spotting cars while out driving around so when I brought home Forza Horizons 2 she was almost as excited as I was.

While she was playing this weekend she stopped and asked, "If this takes place in France why aren't we driving on the other side of the road?"

I honestly didn't have an answer for her. This might be common knowledge for some or even most of you but in looking it up we discovered that there aren't that many countries that drive on the left side of the road. I always assumed it was like the metric system and we were in the minority driving on the right here in the states.

Anyway this website had a pretty cool map and some additional history on the topic.

For taking the time to read this post I posted a couple of shots I caught in photo mode. Which I have to say has been a lot of fun to play around with.

I was in the mustang headed to the next set of events when I happened to pass the GT40. It seemed like the perfect time to take a photo.

Nice RS200 screenshot. Hilarious. God, I am so jealous of everyone who bought this thing. I'll probably get the GOTY at some point if there is such a thing.

Yup, it's pretty much just a few island nations that drive on the left. The Brits are the weird ones. The rest of Europe drives the way we do (just with smaller cars and better education).

OK, so having never played any of the Forza games, I have to ask how this screenshot came to be.

LOL. Someone asked that same question in an online session. I learned that it was a misnomer that most European countries drive on the other side of the road in 6th grade when I had to do a report on Italy.

I thought that was the footage from the 1986 Finnish Rally.

Simple:
Left 6, 500, jump, barrel roll, barrel roll, 100 on roof.

But seriously, it does not take much effort to pull something like that off. One part speed, one part dip in a field and the result is flying through trees at 130 km/h.

I was in the woods heading to look for a barn find and was going as fast as I could, as you do in the woods in a RS 200 and I hit a hill and just launched from there. It was actually really funny to rewind and watch.

Yep. So if any uppity little Brit tells you that you drive on the wrong side of the road, just throw a dart at a World Map. Chances are, it'll land in a country that drives on the right side of the road.

And keep doing so until they leave.

we are not weird ones, it actually make sense when you know the history.

Up to the late 1700's, everybody travelled on the left side of the road because it's the sensible option for feudal, violent societies of mostly right-handed people.

Jousting knights with their lances under their right arm naturally passed on each other's right, and if you passed a stranger on the road you walked on the left to ensure that your protective sword arm was between yourself and him.

Then Napoleon had to go and ruin everything

Revolutionary France, however, overturned this practice as part of its sweeping social rethink. A change was carried out all over continental Europe by Napoleon. The reason it changed under Napoleon was because he was left handed his armies had to march on the right so he could keep his sword arm between him and any opponent.

Yup. Also, you mount a horse from the left side of the horse traditionally (same reason. If you've got a sword on your left hip — to draw with your right hand — you have to mount the horse from your right, the horse's left). And since you don't want to dismount into a busy street, "curbside" became the left, and you would keep left when riding. This transitioned into coaches and eventually cars. And because Britain had the world's largest Navy, AND was pretty much THE country in oceanic trade, this rule carried over to maritime as well. While driving on the right side of the road caught on, boats still pass on the left.
