While mentioning the WRX nameplate may indeed conjure up images of DC shoes and cargo shorts, I stand as a living testament that not all Subie guys are mouth breathing nimrods.

There's more to the Subaru scene than flat brims and stance bros.

It was with that annoying(and sadly often accurate) stereotype in mind that I set about planning a shoot that would show the WRX in a different light. That ended up being quite literally what we were able to do thanks to the thick pre-dawn fog in the mountains above Malibu.

I've learned a-lot since making this film, hard to believe it's nearly a year old now. My techniques and equipment have progressed, I've done a multitude of other projects with cars that are far more interesting to the general public. But for some reason I keep coming back to "Dawn Patrol" and loving it every time I watch it.

If you're a regular reader of TRLD then you know my Subaru currently resides in Vermont under the care of my father while I'm on my German journey with the S4. I will be headed east for the Jalopnik Film Festival next month and plan to head up to VT for a couple days prior.

If anyone wants to bring their vehicle up to drive some really fun country roads I will have my camera equipment with me and will be shooting footage for Dawn Patrol II. Doesn't have to be a Subaru, just has to be clean and simple.

Andrew Maness writes about cars because he has one and also has a computer. He's been known to drunkenly Tweet as !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and upload photos to !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . He also has a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and thinks talking about himself in the 3rd person is really weird but knows it's necessary if he wants to be taken seriously as an Oppo contributor.

sup bro? u guta a problem with flat brim hats? I'm definitely one of the 'non-typical' WRX owners. Instead of a case of Monster Drinks in the back I have 2 baby seats and a stroller, maybe a few 2X4's for whatever this weekend's project will be. I'd love to come drive around with you but its a challenge to get away from the house and kids.

Baby Formula > Energy Drinks.

If you end up being able to sneak away it's gonna be pretty fun. I'll be posting more info on here as the details get nailed down.

Andrew, wtf happened to the Impreza WRX/non-WRX? I am not in any way disparaging your car, but instead am wondering how this went from iconic 90s/early 00s compact badassness to... something less.

Walking through the parking lot this morning I counted two of them and I immediately flashed back to the first WRX wagon I saw in the 90s and the only STI I've ever driven in the early 2000s. Both were awesome, but then, what, hot hatch? Felt like the identity was lost.

Reinvention time is in order.

Were you in Japan back then? The WRX made it's US debut in 2002 and the STi in 2004.

I miss them being quirky cars as well but I also don't mind the grown up sleeper look of the 08/09/10 sedan.

Your iconic 90s/early 00s comact badassness (sic) looks like a Camry of the same vintage:

Nothing has changed. They're still ugly, utilitarian econoboxes with turbo chargers strapped to 'em. And I love that about WRXs.

Nothing has changed. You're just viewing things through rose tinted spectacles.

EDIT: I don't actually think they're ugly. I mean, they're not beautiful in the traditional sense.

I personally love how they look. There's a sort of "use what you've got" kinda' thing going on.

I'm not sure if you are aware, but The Dawn Patrol with Erroll Flynn is an absolutely stellar film

I don't know if you're into classic films, but Erroll Flynn is a god damn icon of cool. The film is about a squadron of WWI fighters, who lose a man after each mission, until none are left.
