It allows the center of gravity to move backwards under hard acceleration to put more traction on the driving wheels.

Like what Jedidiah said. It's old school tech. Although Gassers can still be very fast, due to updates in suspension technology they aren't nearly as popular as they used to be. Although they still have a huge following. There are classes dedicated especially for them.
