Kinja'd!!!

Had to fire an employee today. An employee that (at least at one time) I called friend and whom I nominated for the position.

He's basically been not working and lying about it for some time now. We'd call him on it, he'd fess up, we'd give him another shot. This time that extra shot lasted approximately a week before we caught him lying about what he's doing again. All the time taking a paycheck of course.

He has about $5000.00 in company equipment on his hands. We're withholding his final check until it's all returned. Supposedly tomorrow

The moral of this story? Even if you fall behind, or get caught up in a mess or two at work, being honest and upfront will usually land people on your side. Being a habitual liar will land you unemployed.

Sorry for the rant. Have a XJ220 for your trouble.

That sucks. I had to do the same thing back in 2010. I remember saying something like "I've given you more than enough second chances and now everything is starting to look bad on me." I can't sacrifice my own well-being to keep a poor worker around.

Tried everything to keep the guy but to no avail. Don't let it keep you down.

I had to fire an employee once for drinking and sleeping on the job. But that was pretty easy, as I already didn't like the guy and then we found an empty bottle of vodka in his company issued car, and tracked the GPS back to his house where he took a 4 hour lunch without clocking out. Upon further questioning he admitted to going home to take a "nap" but denied the vodka was his, claiming it was a friend (we also had a no friends in company vehicles policy, a.k.a. company vehicles are for company purposes only).

I've been there. It's not fun. Most take it well because deep down they know it's coming. I just can't handle when the ladies start crying. I always freeze up.

Tough situation man. As a director i worry about this constantly, and i do hire friends. Luckily it continues to work out. But sounds like you did all you could to give them a chance

I had to let a young woman go once and I got the single tear.

It was brutal.

Luckily, I'm not at a high enough level to be able to fire people. I'd hate to fire somebody though, I always imagine myself in the same position as the fire-ee.

He got five in total. He was already being documented before we started working autonomously. As soon as that happen he really went down hill. We're a small company and don't like turnover, so we tried making it work, but he just kept falling back in to old habits. He quite literally had zero work ethic.

The only thing better for your company than hiring someone you already know, is firing them when you've learned they are lying, stealing, or just costing you money in lack of production.

Use it as a growth experience, move on, and make a better choice in the next round...you'll know what NOT to look for this time.

Over the last few years I insist on a female HR rep being with me at the time of termination.

As a director, do you have cool hair like this?

It's tough to not go home and feel like shit but then you slowly realize they got themselves there.

I feel for you, man. Some people don't seem to understand what another chance means. Especially if the criticism repeats.
