Is it Time to Isolate Ourselves a Little More?

Now, the question is pretty self explanatory. The recent changes to Gawker have made it easier than ever to cross the once very separate places in the Gawkersphere and it seems to only have made things worse. Sharing posts about very serious subjects leads to inevitable drama, which hunts and generally rude things being done and said. And for better or worse we are a primarily white, male community, and even with the anonymous nature of the internet its easy to not think about it, but it still is a fact, and it does affect our opinions on these serious subjects. Now I'm not saying to ignore these serious subjects, but if I have a vested interest in social justice or equality I would go to Jezebel and Groupthink, in the same way that if I had any interest in what Apples latest sweeter is I would go to Gizmodo. It just may be time to post a link instead of an entire post, politics and these issues being posted after the jump being enforced a bit more, or maybe just not post them at all. I'm here cause I like cars and the people. I've seen things change greatly over the past 6 years or so, and nothing can tear a group of people apart like politics, and I dont want to see that happen.

I think everyone needs to think before they post. Does this belong on OPPO?

I'm not saying to get rid of everything off topic, but it's pretty clear what belongs and what doesn't. Maybe if there's something off topic but personal you post it on your personal blog and post a link on the main page.

Reposts have gotten ridiculous. No one replied? That means they didn't care, get over it. The morning crowd/evening crowd thing is dumb: people will scroll back and see it.

If it's a repost for an upcoming event that's fine, trying to keep people reminded is okay by me.

Theres been way too much self promotion here. One guy reposes his cars and coffee videos every other day, and that's all he ever posts. Then theres a few writers who post their stories and links to their websites every few hours it feels like.

It's getting old

Agreed, a member on here who actually hangs around quite often reposted one post about 3 times a day for about 4 days.

I HATE reposts, as you said below. If nobody replied, nobody cares.

Also hour rule in the AM hours needs to go.

I just keep my mouth shut at this point.
I know I stirred stuff on sunday, took said post down and tried to contain after math. I think I did, but it seems that its only been since that that so many posts concerning this topic have popped up.

REALLY not sure what is going on, but man how I wish I could have not posted what I did, even though I did update that it was fake.

Well, hindsight is 20/20. Lessons learned on my part.

I am on oppo very early most mornings. I don't understand why you hate hour rule. If noone has posted in one entire hour...a gratuitous car porn isn't hurting anything. it's not contributing much...but noone else is contributing anything at all.

It's what you get for having a fairly open forum with an active community. Once you start restricting it more heavily you lose some of that. There are a couple inflammatory posts (mainly the girl advice ones that can be in poor taste) but that's the way it goes. Live and let live, click in what you want.

Yup, different people like different stuff. I agree on a couple points, some of the personal stuff can be a little offensive on the odd occasion and more than one repost of something is too much. Otherwise 99% of the stuff is fine.

I didn't even know people were re-posting just to get back to the top. Everyone can see the "NEXT PAGE" button on the bottom. That's just silly. I always thought there was an unspoken rule that if you make a post, you only make it once. This isn't a for-sale forum. No "bumps."

I just skip over the personal stuff, but I can imagine it can get weird and offensive. If people gotta vent, go for it. I'm just not gonna read it. No harm done, but most are probably better off keeping it to themselves.

It's mostly comments that he is talking about. There are people that will come from other sites and spam posts with comments about their opinions on something if someone from oppo said something that offended them.

Yup I think people need to pick their times better if they want more views instead of the reposts. That said it doesnt bother me much.

The personal stuff has caused some blow ups in the past, one with K roll in particular. I've vented before on here but like to keep it vague and dont actually state my problems, basically making a post as a distraction. People who specifically list their issues might find its not the best thing to do in certain cases.

hour rule is fine as far as I'm concerned. Usually just a picture of a car, it doesn't crowd anything. I'd much rather have hour rule posts than reposts of a longer article that no one is interested in

Seriously, can we keep the drama to Reddit or Facebook? I come to Oppo for automotive/vehicular/other hobbies, not to witness angry rants. I'm okay with some people asking for help/advice with personal issues once in a while, but this latest incident is unacceptable. I know people have strong opinions on things and wish to voice them but Oppo is not the place. Personally, I ignore it and don't even acknowledge I'm aware of its existence.

It seems kind of silly to throw away years of community over a couple conflicts.

I've been here for 4 years. I've been here for numerous Kinja changes. I've been yelled at and done my fair share of yelling. I'm not about to leave.

I do tend to agree with Jayhawk Jake though.

Please note: The following is the pot calling the kettle black. I have been guilty of this before, but will try to stop.

Reposts can get kind of ridiculous. If it's an event, great. If it's 5 pictures from Autocross, nah.

I'm not saying they should be banned, but I don't really see the point of NSFW posts.

The amount of gibberish posts tends to get kind of ridiculous towards the evening.

I don't want to put anyone down, but I tend to agree. I have seen said person's post and no one is perfect. The first post was kind of an attack and, unless a huge chunk of that was deleted, I don't really see a reason for the rant.

Yeah, and I'm sad at how often I've been guilty of it. It seems like when there were less people ~2 years ago, the posts were less frequent but the quality was much higher.

In the context of a post asking if oppo should isolate itself, saying this REALLY sounds like you're trying to make oppo into some kind of weird mad men sexism/white supremacy group. Either that or you think it always has been. I mean really. What you just said is that oppo is mostly white men and you want to keep it that way by potentially isolating. Furthermore you don't really care about outside opinions, if you did, you would go somewhere else, but you don't so it can be inferred that you don't care. Okay fine, but that sounds really not cool dude. In fact, I'm sure you wish I hadn't even said this because if you wanted the opinions of people who are not white men, you would have asked and you didn't. Idk dude. Enjoy your white male car club.

That was a kind way of saying it doesn't matter what we say to many of those that engage in these topics because to them my opinion is purely skin deep and the fact that I am white and male means a hell of a lot more than the words I speak. Especially to those that dig up old posts for the soul purpose of stiring up shit.

You wouldn't know that I have an two sisters and a mother that I care for more anything in the world, and a friend group made up primarily of women, the concerns that they have and the opinions they hold shape my opinions on these topics. You wouldn't know that I have an alcoholic father that strengthens my bond with the women in my family. You wouldn't know that one of my best friends is gay, and I stick up for that entire community every chance I get. You wouldn't know that I grew up in one of the most diverse parts of the state I live in and thinks its different and weird to be in a place that is not sufficiently diverse.
