I got in touch with the owner of that AW11 MR2 I posted about the other day. It sounds like it's an Sn210 dream!

Kinja'd!!!

One owner car originally purchased by an elderly gentleman in Maine who drove it a little and stored it in the winters. Only put 52,000 miles on it. Rust free, totally original.

Unfortunately, the owner passed away and after two years, his daughter decided to sell it. The guy who has it now bought it and brought it to his shop in NH for his grand-daughter. Unfortunately the grand-daughter doesn't want it because it's a MANUAL! Now he's trying to sell it.

I want to buy it and bring it to Massachusetts. The only thing in my way is the fact that he doesn't have a title for the car. Maine, NH, and even RI won't issue titles for vehicles over ten years old. In Mass we're lucky we don't need titles for dishwashers and refrigerators. I've heard Mass DMV is notoriously difficult to deal with getting a new title.

I called my insurance company, and they told me all I would need is a Bill of Sale and I can apply for a new one no problem...

Anybody have some advice to offer? Should I walk away from this one? I have new car fever so set me straight if I should pursue this car or not! I plan on taking a ride to the local dmv tomorrow to ask for sure.

Kinja'd!!!

222d for your advice!

Got a family member in another state who can buy it and get it titled there, and then sell it to you with the new title?

Also, how much? Prices on these are going up stupidly fast and "rust free" is pretty damn appealing.

Talk directly to the DMV about this first. Especially if your state is tough to deal with.

Yes, but those states don't issue titles for cars that old. He's asking $4900, but i wouldn't give him more than $4500. It's the nicest one I've seen, and I've been looking for a while....

$4500 is still a bit much. I haven't seen one over $3000 in a long time, but I also haven't been watching closely. You'll need to find an oppo-ite who knows Toyotas better than I do.

unfortunately, that's the going rate around here. The used car market in MA sucks. This guy wants $4000 for his, and its got rust, rice, and 113k miles. Oh yeah, and a check engine light lol

Seller's market, it seems. I doubt they last long in the winters up there.

You don't need the title. But you do need the most recent registration if you don't have it. I just bought a Miata in NH, brought it to MA. No title, but guy had been driving it, so I had the current registration and the bill of sale. Went without a hitch, excepting getting screwed on sales tax because NADA doesn't account for mileage or condition on cars over 20yrs old ("classics"

If you have AAA give them a call. Some regions have services for this type of thing.

Sweet! It sounds like he had temp tags on it because he's a mechanic, so that's another fold in my ordeal. I'm not sure if he ever registered it himself. Like i said, it was supposed to be a gift for his daughter.

What are your plans for the Miata?

Walk. Have you driven one? Do you want supercharged or N/A? Considered a 90-95 model year? 00-04 (I think)? Slow down, think, drive everything you can get your hands on.

No I haven't driven one. I'd prefer a s/c but those are few and far between. I do like the sw20's, but those are also difficult to find in this condition and when I do, they're usually asking way too much. Like $8 grand. I do not like the 00-04 models. This would be a toy for me, nothing more. If preserve it, take it to shows, cruise around on Sunday's, then sell it in a year or two.
