I'm not necessarily a manual downer/Auto SMG fan boy, but I know when a car comes with a DCT/PDK/super fast-shifting 8 speed box, there's probably a good chance that it'll be faster than the stick.

Truthfully, the modern automatic transmission is a better piece of technology than conventional manuals. You don't have looming clutch repairs, you can set shift points precisely, and it make cars easier to drive.

Unfortunately, autos are mushy as hell from the factory because people don't like transmissions that shift so hard your seat feels like it kicks you in the head for some reason.

I don't like paddle shifters, but a nice ratchet shifter and shift kit will get you plenty of grins from an auto. Putting a line lock on your front brakes makes it even better.

I'm telling you, Jalopnik FP commenters have gotten really smarmy and redundant with this stuff. Some guy yesterday I made the mistake of replying to (see: whine whine bitch bitch moan moan more driving feel) replied back with "no car is more fun with a manual anymore". Didn't dignify that with a reply, nor do I respond to any of the other 90% of comments now because they are basically that but worded differently.

Oh, I agree. I enjoy driving a stick more than automatic. But for a DD in Houston traffic, I'd probably go with whatever auto the car had for an option.

I agree completely. I'll never bash someone for getting a stick on a Challenger Hellcat instead of the 8 speed auto.

As far as I'm concerned, it comes down to personal preference and drivability. If I wanted a fun weekend car that I could rip around town/at a track, I'd probably choose a stick. If I wanted a DD that I could track, I'd go auto (IF it were a fancy setup that is beneficial to performance). From my standpoint, it would be difficult for me to shift on traffic AND keep tabs on my three kids in the backseat. Ya dig?

If you've seen my comments around, and lets be honest, you probably have(I rant a lot) I am not fond of the Hellcat or the Z06. This comes down to various things, mainly weight+superchargers, but at the end of the day I would not mind the company of one in an empty parking lot. Any car that is aimed at Jalops is probably going to be a fun deal no matter how they got there.

I have an automatic. I love it.

I've driven a manual. I loved it.

I see no reason whatsoever to prefer one to the other; it all depends on how you drive and what you want to use it for. There is no better. There is no worse. Modern autos with paddle shifters? Better than old manuals. Old autos? Awful. Old manuals? Slow but dear GOD they're fun and far superior to old autos.

Then again, I have an old auto and I love it.

It depends on the user.

I don't really have what you'd call a lifestyle, but I can hardly deal with my responsibility free life without jumping out of my window every hour, so I feel like I probably shouldn't have kids. On top of that my already horrible social skills are 10x worse with children and I'd have to find some bearded woman in a trading cards store who would be willing at some point to have kids with me. So I'll stick with rowing my own 4 (+3) speeds, thank you very much!

Nothing beats a classic or lightweight car that really involves you, so I wholeheartedly agree. I don't care what people say about your Z06 opinion, because you're right that it should be an all-out track/road machine and nothing less than that.

I honestly don't care what someone prefers, but this constant FP crap talking trash about manual transmissions makes me wonder if I'm reading Jalopnik or richkidsportscardouche.com. Now I must see if that's a thing. Also, old manuals are the best despite being slow and unwieldy at times! GM's old 4ATs really do their jobs well, too. I mean, the one good thing about the '82 Corvette was its revolutionary automatic which of course, did not belong in any Corvette of respectable performance.
