A neighbor brought me a piece of banana pie. I've never had it made like this before. Normally, you slice bananas in baked crust, then pour pudding over it and top with meringue or whipped cream. This lady sliced bananas in baked crust, then made instant vanilla pudding and folded it into the whipped cream. That mixture was spread over the bananas. It was excellent!! I have nice neighbors.

I remember it being some banana flavour cream-pudding thing, no whip cream, no real banana slices.

Real banana slices are what really make it.

That sounds pretty damn good. Graham cracker crust? That is the only way to go.
There are three southern things I have come to appreciate by living in Atlanta:
1) they know how to make a good buttermilk biscuit down here. Some of the best anywhere.
2) sausage and cheese grits with jalapeños are amazing.
3) the ladies at The Beautiful restaurant make the best banana pudding anywhere.

Her crust was regular pie crust, but I agree with you that graham cracker crust is the best.
I imagine the buttermilk biscuits in the South can't be beat. I have no idea about grits.

I was very skeptical about grits for a long time when I moved down here. After 12 years I tried a bowl being sold as a fund raiser for a coworker. With sausage, cheese and jalapeño they are unbelievable. Fancy restaurants down here will sell them with strip and Cajun spices, those are ok, but pail to the bowl I can get for $3 in our shops at work.

The sausage, cheese and jalapeño grits sounds great. I love hominy, so I'd probably like grits too.

Some folks make their Banana pudding that way, too. That's too bad. Using vanilla pudding is cheating, I prefer to make my own custard. Actually the pudding recipe on the side of the Vanilla Wafers box is pretty good. I take it a few steps further, but its pretty good.

I agree that it's cheating to use boxed pudding, but time wise, it does a good job, IMO.
