Holy Shit they finally finished it? That is AWESOME!
Slightly on topic: Here is a shot of my marauder parked next to 4012 at steamtown this summer, I snuck in with a friend like 10 minutes before they closed and took a couple of pictures.
4012 needs some work, (okay some is being generous, this thing needs a ton of work) but its still standing.

how much of it works? if thats pre resto, it already looks better than 4012 as it sits. Probably because it doesn't get hammered by the elements as bad.

Wow really love seeing a big boy. Really neat to someone I'd going to restore it. They need to be preserved, steam locomotives are just fascinating.

I read about this a while ago when UP was saying they were going to restore it. I "TLDR'd" and saw the light on and was like, ermahgerd its done
no wonder I saw no steam
well at least its finally underway. It'll be really interesting how much it takes to finish this, and what it will be like when its done. I remember for years it was determined that restoring any big boy would be to expensive. I also know the one they picked is the one thats in the best shape out of all of them. I think it was 4006 thats in the worst shape out of all of them but I could be wrong
The fact that these even exist is such a 1940's 'Merica Fuck Yeah! marvel of engineering.

We're real excited in my town about the 611; it's great to see these old engines on the rails.

10 freight cars for braking...thats pretty difficult to put into perspective. I love going to Steamtown, I really miss it.
The physics and raw materials that go into building a free moving machine like that blow my mind. Yes, diesel cargo ships make this look like a toy, but these locomotives are just awe inspiring because you can get so close to them.
What I would do to be able to see a Big Boy move under its own power...may never happen, but the thought hasnt left my mind since I was a wee little rug rat.

Yup, a 4-8-8-4 The biggest stem locomotive ever built. 132 feet long and weighed 1.2 million pounds. Can't wait til the resto is done and it can be viewed in motion.

The rail group in Pomona took really good care of her while on display. They regularly oiled and lubed bearings, axles, rods, etc. It's the main reason she was such an excellent candidate for a complete restore.

I love that Garrett-type locomotives exist, especially because my name is Garret

Grew up along the UP mainline east of Cheyenne, so plenty of opportunities to see 8444 or the Challenger 3985 at speed. They are magnificent beasts.

Whats so amazing about this train is that if you look at the video, and realize that each of its large main wheels (drivers) is over 6 feet tall.....then we begin to see the enormity of this train. whenever it does it's big tour, all of us need to go out and see it wherever it goes. I saw the Challenger years back and it was incredible. this thing will be an order of magnitude better.
