The wife got a new job which means my frantic searching for a newer ride for her can slow down a bit (the commute is now cut in half) she's vetoed all small cars we've tested (Focus ST, new Mini, etc) and has basically said "I Like sitting up and I want a damn SUV!"
Of course she does.
I'd like to get decent gas mileage, and be a vehicle that we can drive on our 500+ mile weekend adventures to Minneapolis/St. Paul.
Car wise, she's left the Cadillac ATS and the Buick Regal GS in contention, but she will likely suggest she doesn't feel safe being so low to the ground (I've tried, I have) and we'll cross them off the list too.
Jeep Grand Cherokee is about the only SUV we both like that is within our price range optioned how we want it. Sweet spot seems to be a Limited with the Luxury Group 2 (heated/cooled seats, the 8 inch screen) and Off-Road Adventure Group 2 (Proper 4wd and air suspension) and that lands us at $44,885 with the gas v6. We are going to go drive the gas v6 and see if we like it but getting a gas v6 around here can be hard with any options (South Dakota pretty much believes V6's should be the cheapest vehicle possible). That means we either really take it in the shorts on gas (5.7L V8) or we dive into.... DIESEL LAND.
Certainly in SD there is no shortage of places to get diesel so availability isn't a concern, but I wonder how reliable and PITA to work on they will be down the road. At the 15-20k miles we're planning to put on it a year it pays back fast enough for me (we'll keep this truck a while, if I had to guess).
Who has a Chrysler 3.0 Diesel opinion!?

I've driven compact hatchbacks my entire car driving life (which is admittedly not that very long). I love their practicality, their great mileage for a DD, and the nimbleness and easy maneuverability afforded by a small vehicle. But for some reason I fucking want a Grand Cherokee SRT. Don't need it, could never find a practical use for it, but there's something that vehicle that I just lust after. It's ridiculous in the most amazing way and I fucking want it.
To keep this on topic however, is there some reason you aren't considering the Jeep Cherokee? It sounds to me like you don't actually need a very big SUV, so a Crossover might be more up your wife's alley.

I bought a TDI wagon a few months ago and it has held up quite well to the polar vortex. I garage it at night, however - not an option for everyone. Diesel made sense for me because we have a family lake house to visit quite often and her parents are close enough to go visit a lot but far enough that it sucks on gas.
From the maintenance perspective, you are looking at reduced upkeep - longer distances between oil changes, but more oil. Yuor fuel is a lubricant here. The JSW I have in particular runs a high pressure fuel system, so gelling is of little concern as long as you let the glow plugs get a little warm before trying to turn it over. This system has a knack for taking out the fuel filter from what I've read, but the aftermarket community is strong with the folks from Wolfsburg and there are a couple solutions in place that people have come up with.
The biggest drivability differences I've noticed is that 1. power delivery is slower, but it comes like a waterfall once you wind it up and 2. the 2.0 TDI w/ a 6-spd manual likes to stall more than I'm used to. In other words, I have stalled it two or three times and I've driven three pedals for awhile - this is not so much user error as getting used to a motor that likes to be in the low end, but can't sit there by itself. Remember what the power cycle in a diesel actually is. The compression causes combustion, not a spark.
Have you considered diesel VW SUVs?

Only people that hate liberty and America dislike the Grand Cherokee SRT.
Remember this.

Depending on discounts, we were looking at exactly the GC you described, but were able to get in an Overland for less/easier that finding a Limited equipped as you've described. We've only had it a month, but I love it so far and my wife (it's technically her vehicle) really, really loves it. Our local dealer has Overlands listed online at under $42k. They had a bunch of them, but only 2 Limiteds with the Luxury group, and neither in a color my wife liked.
As far as your question on the diesel, I can't answer that one. Hopefully someone else can chime in.

Thanks for the insights, we're working mostly on MSRP right now which is silly but good for spitballing. Mind tossing me a link to your local dealers site?

My Dad and I looked at a GC diesel to lease, they wanted $750/mo. with $4k down and we just walked out. Another dealer said $700 a month for $3k down but still.
I don't think you'll find one under $50k, assuming you get a 4WD one. The Limited V6 seems like a good fit like you said. Even if you want the 5.7L, they're only $1-2k less than the diesels so it's probably not worth it unless you really need the power.

We've tested and disliked VW's recently. Remember, I'm not looking for a diesel just for a diesel, it just happens to be an interesting option on the vehicle we picked out.

A.) I would get an SRT8 if I wasn't trying to buy a viper at the same time, plenty of fun there.
B.) Yes, she fucking HATES the way it looks. I'm not completely off put by it, but when she says "HELL NO" she means "HELLLL NOOOO" and it will not even be considered. While we don't need to buy a full size SUV for this vehicle it will kill two birds, we need something to pull our boat and a trailer for house remodel projects- the Rav we have wont' pull the boat and my Jeep Wrangler won't either, so somewhere in this process we need to end up with a tow vehicle.

while I doubt I'll find a limited with a diesel and the options I want I am open to ordering one. Though I agree most places with diesels have them in the overland or summit.

I like the VM diesel in the WK2 much more than I like the Benz diesel that was in the last gen. That Benz V6 just isnt the same as the old inlines for reliability. If you want reliability with a diesel like you used to get back in the days, go back in the days. Blocks, injection pumps etc are just not built to last. VW has been going down this road for some time with the TDI

Ahh, yeah the looks of the Cherokee grew on me since it's reveal, but between her hating the looks and you guys needing a good tow vehicle - the case for the Grand Cherokee becomes obvious in that respect. Sorry I can't help further, I don't have any hands-on experience with Diesel Jeeps.

This is where we purchased out GC. We shopped 3 other local dealers, and they gave us the best price. The other 2 were higher priced with Limiteds and couldn't come close on the Overland.
