A relative of mine is in the market for a 2+2 convertible sports car. Currently owns a 997.2 Carrera 4 Convertible with PDK (blue on beige). And it's time to upgrade. He's considering a 991 Carrera 4S with Powerkit and PDK in blue. I've told them that's an excellent choice; however, there are other cars out there.
Musts are: reliable, new, fits 2 kids in the rear, and exciting.
- BMW M6 Cabrio
- Porsche 991 Turbo Convertible
- Aston Martin Vanquish Volante
- Bentley GT Speed Convertible
What am I missing? Which should I recommend?

I've sat in the back of all these cars, and the rear seat usability is sort of all over the place. I think it goes Bentley > M6 > Aston > Porsche, but the last two are pretty close. If those kids have legs, I would probably not recommend the last two (although I did once know a woman who drove an older 911 with two kids seats in the back).
Since there are already some GTs on your list, how about the Maserati GTS convertible? I thought the backs were better than the M6.

The vanquish is the most beautiful convertible on sale right now. Hands down. Tell him to get that one.

Tossing my vote in for the Vanquish then.

Great idea, these are gorgeous and gorgeous sounding, but they're getting a bit on in age...

Fair point.
The only counterpoint would be that he's owned German cars since day 1. Methinks he may get a bit fed up with some of the Aston "compromises."
He's actually owned some pretty exciting cars come to think of it... BMW Z1, BMW E36 M3, BMW E39 M5, BMW Alpina B5, BMW X5 5.0.

Thanks for the VERY valuable input. I had a suspicion that the Bentley and M6 had the most legroom and you've confirmed it.
Criticisms for the Maser are: un-intuitiveness of the controls, things go wrong, and the concept is a bit old now.
I'd say M6 would be a great suggestion as he's owned a B5 Alpina, E29 M5, E36 M3 and Z1.

Z1? He sounds like an awesome dude. Another one I just thought of is the California.
But if he really wants German, then the Turbo S is the best (and seemingly the only) way to go. But it still is a bit....common for my tastes.

You must be joking! You'd have to HATE the kids to put them in the back of a Cali!

That M6 is going to be hard to beat if rear room matters at all.

Oh he wants to put actual people back there? I think the Maserati, M6, and Bentley are his only choices.

Yeah, I think the design will stand the test of time (much like most Astons have, in my opinion), but if I bought a brand new one, and Maserati replaced it with it's successor the following year, I'd be pissed.

Exactly.
They haven't dropped much in value either, so used isn't really a great option. You'd want the warranty.

I'd say he should stick to the Carrera 4 cabriolet. Ticks all the boxes and he's already familiar with the car. Presumably, he likes it too.
I saw a 911 cab the other day on the highway, "that must be a Carrera 4," I thought to myself, "especially considering the nasty winter we've been having." And so it was: where other cabs - including the others in this post - are sitting in nice and warm garages, this one soldiers on in the snow and ice.

I liked this post even MORE because you made a mistake, because it means someone ELSE is so blinded by the pants-tightening beauty of the F-Type that they can't think straight. +1

If he likes German cars, and is considering the M6, how about the Audi RS5? Sure, it's no Carrera, but 450hp from a 4.1L V8, and REAL, USABLE back seats. Plus, it's impossibly sexy.

There is a quite a bit of sexypants going on in that design.

Except for the M6 and Bentley, none of the cars you've posted will have much of a usable back seat. His kids are outgrowing the 911 pretty soon right?

Yeah you're right. M6 will be my suggestion. He's owned M cars and Alpinas before so it'll be a natural transition.
I've also driven the new M6 in Germany and it is incredible. Drove like a hot rod. Comfortable like a 7 Series. A beaut too.

Great suggestion, it was the only German car, leave for the inferior M4 Convertible (to the M6 Convertible) that I left out. Methinks that he'll want something a bit more posh or special. M6 being the least special of my suggestions. Not an Audi guy either unfortunately.

Good point. Stick with what you like. 991 4S will be a nice improvement over the 997.2 Carrera 4 anyways. Plus the new convertibles just look so nice with the raised rear roofline a la Speedster.

They should be wicked, but he's already owned an M3 back in the day. It actually went Golf, Z1, E36 M3, E39 M5, E60 B5 Alpina, X5 5.0, Porsche 911.

I'm trying to warm him up for a 599 SA Aperta but he won't budge on the fact that he wants a proper 2+2 convertible. It would make for a splendid investment.

Porsche catering to the bracket of people who would opt for the SL65 AMG over the SL63 AMG without batting an eye. And then de-badge the SL65 AMG.
