A rear wing was rejected because engineers consider them kludges and, as Ferrari chairman Luca di Montezemolo declared after helicoptering in to Fiorano from nearby Bologna, "I find them vulgar."

I tend to agree, but if this is wrong, I'm not sure I want to be right...

Ricer wings are now cool since they piss Ferrari off.

I think they've been thinking that since the days of the 360. Funnily, their race cars always have them regardless...

In all fairness, I think the F40 was more of a production race car than a super car. And in its time, it was definitely a tamer look than the Countach. While I absolutely love the F40, I tend to agree more with Montezemolo in most cases. I seem to always prefer a body molded wing to the park bench alternative. Just looks cleaner.

It's only a ricer wing if it's on a FWD car ;).

It's like they forgot the 40 and the 50. Even the Enzo had a bit of aero. Not a giant wing, but still. I guess when you're already going to catch fire, you don't need downforce?

I agree that their current cars don't have the right body style for wings... maybe the La Ferrari... but still. They can be perfect on certain cars.

TONS of aero on the Enzo (and on the 458 Speciale - check out the side-skirts), but no wing. Plenty of ways to make downforce w/o one.

I'm on board with "Save the Whales" and the high tech spoilers/air brakes on many modern sports cars, but the vast majority are so terrible, and generally not functional.

Wings on roadcars are good under two conditions. They must be factory. They must adorn a car capable of speeds where the wing is justified.

Just because the car is capable of high speeds doesn't mean the wing is necessarily functional. But yes, factory + functional is okay in my book, even though I often prefer the sleeker, sleeper-er look of a rear spoiler delete.

Agreed. That should be a third criteria; the wing must be functional.

I honestly couldn't care less about function with wings/spoilers. As long as they look cool.

God dammit! It was a picture of the abomination that is the front winged Tc that the douchebag Chris Rado drove in one of the time attack series.

To be fair, a full wing vs. a subtle spoiler is kind of a different. I wonder where the line is in actual size shape...

I think "wing" differentiates from the more generic term "spoiler" when there's clear separation from the body of the car itself. A ducktail spoiler is integrated, a lip spoiler is attached to the car the full length of the part. In my mind, a wing is attached in two or three places and allows airflow both above and below.

Ah, well as retarded as that TC looked. The wing was actually serving a useful perpose so I don't know if that is considered "ricer".

He's right, I mean modern designs look so cluttered with wings. Not to mention they add quite a bit of drag. There are lots of ways to make downforce by just correctly shaping the body, as newer cars have shown. But I still love the F40/F50.

What's extra funny about that image, is that the front wing is only there to reduce the counter productive front lift created by the rear wing.

But the funny thing about this is that the front end of the extra special 458 is pretty vulgar. Not attaching a wing to the back end doesn't keep a car from being vulgar...
