Why do I find late 70s/early-mid 80s American cars so cool?

It is against popular opinion, but I really agree with that statement now.

Despite being technically bad cars they definitely oooze a certain type of coolness. Dont be ashamed, you are among friends.

Because they are. I think there's a certain "Knock knock. Who's there? FREEDOM" quality about them.

I think it could be their no fucks given attitude. Power? Efficiency? Practicality? Quality? They are the last of that "old school classy". They are kinda a big middle finger to the rest of the world that says "you do your thing, we'll do ours".

Because they were built in a simpler time long since past, when the world's problems could be solved with sharp angles and long hoods, pillow-top red leather, landau tops, and wire wheels. It was that easy, you didn't need fuel efficiency, performance, or reliability, you just cared about about how the car looked and how you felt driving it. I've taken my grandparents' 1977 Eldorado around the block and I felt like the king of the neighborhood. That's what's missing on modern cars.

Because the are, for some reason I like Pontiac Catalinas. Why? No clue. They're just cool.

Exactly what's been drawing me to them. They really do make you the king of the road, I bet. There's a mint '79 425 Coupe De Ville D'Elegance near me with 29k on the clock for $4,500. My heart aches knowing it will be chopped up and lifted to put 24s on. *shudders*

Feel free to disagree with me, but I think it's just as much fun to throw on a pair of shades, put the top back on an old American land yacht, crank up the tunes, and just cruise around slow as it is to go a hooning in a sports car.

That is the ultimate granparentmobile. There's a '76 for sale on my local CL for $3850. The want—no, the need. It's killing me.

I do prefer the slightly earlier ones as well. But, the color and wheels on this aren't for me. Wheels aren't so bad. Body lines are great.

It's great. Even at a high price these are bargains. There's a fully funtcional '76 Eldo convertible white/white for $3850. So much want.

Because kindly old man with impeccable taste and an air of badassness who wanted to eventually be the reason why an old American luxury car enthusiast has a mint coupe De Ville. I am that enthusiast. Unfortunately, I also can't buy a land barge right now.

DO IT!!! Everyone needs an old Cadillac in their life at least once, and it's not like you're going to find one for any cheaper. Apparently they're easy to work on, too, my grandpa did all his own maintenance well into his 70s, so it could be a fun project.

Grandfather bought a '77 Sedan sitting in a grocery store parking lot back in the fall. No inspection, no history, $3k. Faded paint, a lot of white electrical tape to hide tears in the white vinyl interior. Whole family has given him shit over it since he bought it in September, basically telling him it would take $10k to make it worth $5k...which is true. I'm happy he "finally" got a Cadillac but where we see a late 70's rust bucket, he see's a 50's "big fin" Caddy...and its not. Really trying to get him to lease his first new car since he bought the 1982 Pontiac Grand Prix he still has, he deserves something nice (Grandmother died last year and he has freedom he hasn't had in decades). But he can't get over infotainment systems. Tried to tell him it still has a gas, a brake, and a gear selector. Everything else is fluff. But his cars barely start, they're constantly braking and he has to pay out of pocket. A nice $199 lease would change his world.

He sounds like a really cool guy. I am longing for a '77 sedan De Ville, but it seems like a lot of work. A new (or at least good condition) car would probably make things a lot easier on him, but you have to respect the jalop spirit! I have not met a single older person (including my grandparents) who want to own a cool classic. His car situation would make for a pretty interesting post, I think.

He is a great guy. Has given each of my cars a nick-name "Grey Ghost" for the SLS, "Black Beauty" for the Rover, etc. He loves the CTS-V but says he doesn't feel comfortable with that much power. He could easily swing a '14 CTS V-Sport. I think when he found out the lease just dissolves upon death he warmed up to the idea. He just didn't want to burden anyone with a car payment if he suddenly got ill.

Saw this on CL. Makes me wish I had an extra $600 laying around. Seems like such a bargain for 500 cubes (8.2 L).

Someone's going to get a hell of a deal on that, that's a great price for any car, let alone a running and driving Fleetwood, that's like $1.20 per cubic inch, haha. Shame you don't have the money, this thing would have to be in the top 5 coolest cars owned by Opponauts even as it sits now. Dammit, now I want to go on Craiglist and find one of these...
