A new model year always brings with it the risk of transforming the predecessor into an embarrassment, as is the goal for the designers, but occasionally the aged chassis can still hold its own in the used marketplace and possibly steal new car sales away from its replacement.

With all the dazzle the new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! has brought, the old C6 Z06 is still no automotive powerhouse to scoff at, keeping with it a classic manual transmission and a low price tag.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

What other models were not shamed by their replacements?

The way the question is phrased is confusing. If you mean ashamed of its replacement, then:

The E46 M3

Kinja'd!!!

I still find it to be superior in almost all areas besides power to the E90. I kept a E46 M3 for 10 years and miss it dearly. I had a E90 M3 for a less than a year and didn't give a second thought to trading it on a C63.

If you mean shamed (spanked/supplanted/etc) by it's replacement, the new M3/4 is mopping the floor with the E90 in all the ways I care about.

...Basically I'm saying I don't like the E90 M3 compared to its predecessor and successor.

True. I have both and I feel quicker in the E46. I am more confident driving fast through the twisties in the E46. Both my cars are stock and I think the stock setup in the E46 coupe is better than the stock setup in the E92 coupe or E90 sedan. That being said the E9X seems to benefit more from after market mods than the E46 did. We have some cool opponauts who have improved their E9X cars and track them with great success.

I am selling my E46 M3 not because I don't love it, but because the E90 is my only 4 door car. It can really come in handy to have a 4 door car sometimes... I wish there had been a sedan version of the E46 like there was the E36

Agree to disagree. The S65 engine is flawless. My previous car had an N54. Turbos are for the birds. The only thing they're good for on a track car is creating a whole lot of heat.

And the M3/4? I'll never own a sports car with a feature called "lane departure warning." If we let the Germans tell us what's best, we'll end up like the GT3 - two pedals only. Although that doesn't bother a Mercedes driver, I guess =)

03-04 Mustang Cobra.

Once again the pinnacle of an era for a lot of people. Sure the new 2013 GT500s are faster, but they're also heavier, more expensive, and lack the true race car heritage that the Cobras do.

For most Mustang enthusiasts, the 03-04 Cobra will always be the biggest step in Mustang history. Possibly only bested by the 2000 Cobra R.

On further reflection, it might be that I like the M156 so much more than the S65 that it is contributing to my tainted view of the E90. Nothing from Audi or AMG could match the E46 at the time, whereas the RS4 and C63 were legitimate competition for the E90.

I wouldn't call it bad.

It was smaller and lighter than the outgoing '73, it was fuel efficient in a time where it was sorely wanted, and they didn't look too bad considering the sudden law changes regarding bumpers (and the competition at the time).

That being said, it hasn't aged well.

Oh, it's still a good car, I just don't think it improves over the 135is other than it looks less smushed and offers more gizmos (if such things appeal to you). I'm biased because I have a 135is.

Compared to my car, the M235i is:

Slightly heavier

ZF 8-speed instead of 7-speed DCT

Not-as-good steering from the F30 3-series

Stuck with iDrive even if you don't want navigation

Makes fake engine noises where the 135is has the M Performance Exhaust and real engine noises

That's a very accurate observation. Having competition in this segment is fantastic for the enthusiast. If I only needed to use the car as a daily driver, I think I'd find it almost impossible to choose between the E90 M3, RS4 and C63. I might actually pick the Audi.

As it is, though, I needed a car that was just as capable on the track and I'm sorry to say that only one of the above really fits that description. I've been on track with multiple C63s (though I've never driven one myself) and, while I absolutely love hearing the exhaust, it's just not a "track car" by any stretch.

Regardless of our quips from generation to generation, I don't think there will really ever be any M3 (or 4, I guess) that will be "shamed" by its replacement. If we don't think the US spec E36 fits into that category (and I really don't think it does), the other cars are probably safe as well. Each generation tends to be a pretty radical departure from the previous, and they all have their charms. As much as I love the E90, I still admire the E46 and would be proud to own one...

I'm assuming fake engine noises because the M135i has them. BMW calls it a Sound Symposer.

If they would've stopped trying to make it a compact city car and instead learned that a big majority of them were being bought by enthusiasts, then they might have went a different route. But Toyota does kind of suck at keeping a sports car model around for very long, so its to be expected.

I'd love to see a modern-day MR2. Give it the same specs as the old turbo 2nd gen, but with a newer body and people would be all over it.

I don't mind Ford's "sound tube" so much since it's real engine noise being piped in from the engine bay to the cabin.

I'd want a little more power, more like 300/300. The FRS almost makes what the 2.0T did as a NA 2.0, so new tech would easily support more power.

In keeping with the theme of the title picture, the C2 Corvette was not shamed by its replacement:

Kinja'd!!!

The C3 was the same chassis with a new body and interior, and those are just different rather than better. What the C3 did to better was emissions, but that came at a very high cost in terms of power.

YES!

Reigntastic is right though - at least they did even it out with the added power.

The 3rd gen went the opposite direction - significant weight loss, but also a significant power loss. I bet it's still quick and insanely fun, but it is a good answer for this question. Kind of a let down - especially when it became it convertible-only (in the US) :/

ha, I do see a bit of Z4 in it now that you mention it.

It looks nice, but I can see what you mean. It does have a few too many sharp edges and doesn't necessarily scream Miata.
But at the same time, I can definitely see Mazda going this direction with the Miata.

If they can drop the weight considerably - which I believe they were talking about - then we'll be all good. I think they were also saying about having an optional low-end 1.5L motor which is a whole lotta bleh, but most importantly, they gotta keep the weight down. It'd be nice if they could trim down the body to make it less chunky than the NC, but I don't really see Mazda making it any smaller :/
