Ok so this one might seem obvious around here, but I've noticed that some people aren't all that crazy about clutch pedals. So lets see just how many Opponauts attend the church of the manual vs the synagogue of the dual clutch.

I voted standard manual, but I do like a good dual clutch, especially if it's a race. I honestly can't decide which is worse between slushboxes and CVTs.

A regular slushbox, because you don't get the mileage with it. At least with a CVT you can manually select ratios

Since I live where I live, I'll always be a three pedal man. BUT, If I lived in let's say NY? I'd probably get an automagic or something.

I go to repair costs and cvt's are way more expensive so those are the worst transmission

I'm a big fan of the SkyActiv AT in my Mazda3. I've had people actually confuse it with a Dual-Clutch it shifts so quickly. I also like the hybrid torque converter that it uses at under 5mph - makes it nice and easy for pulling out of parking spaces.

Voted standard manual, but I've experienced good paddle shifting cars (Gallardo and 458) around at track and damn it can be awesome. On a run of the mill car, give me 3 pedals.

No option for single-clutch automated manual (a la E60 M5 SMG)? That was a blast. I like the kick in the pants on the shifts, rather than the mushy feel of a DSG. Granted, the last DSG I've driven was a first generation Porsche PDK, but it still felt mushy like an automatic in comparison to my M5.

It's got to have a driver-controlled clutch for me to like it.

Exception: 1/2 ton F-150s from the early to mid 1990s. Ford put a 5 speed Mazda manual in the 1/2 tons, which meant you couldn't tow jack according to Ford. The 5MT + 2.73 axle was officially not recommended to tow anything.

The E4OD automatic was the only way to officially tow things more than 1 ton. Either that or go up to a 3/4 ton (which had a ZF manual).

I've owned a CVT and now own a 6 spd auto, I much, much, much prefer the 6 spd auto. I've recently come to believe that automatic transmissions aren't so terrible anymore. Although given the choice a manual would've been cool.

Only 5 forward gears, powering the front set of wheels, 1.6 liter of displacement from 4 pots, no force feeding. Once 109 horses, but it's from 2001, so a few have fled the proverbial barn.

And I did average 42 US mpg (5,5 liter/100km, or 1:18,2) for a whole bloody tank, so the girl is allright. I've done over 150.000 km with her. I'll live with 5 gears. :)

I did as well, but only because I haven't put a dual-clutch in my car (which is the eventual plan), so I can't really say that I prefer it. I may, I may not, but I won't know until then. So, between the other three options, Manual it is.More fun if you ask me.

What's the whip?

Also, to (very lightly) jab at the point about fuel economy, having more forward gears isn't a hindrance to that. In fact, if I understand correctly, 5th was originally meant to be a gear that would allow you to travel 50MPH at relatively low and efficient RPM. Then the speed limit went up to 60 or 70 on most Highways/Interstates, and now I ride in 5th at 3K. Wish I had a 6th so I could slow-cruise at like 1800...

I like it for the fact it's more fun, cheaper to work on, and gives more flexibility. In a perfect world I would have my go fast car setup with a self blipping sequential dog tooth but still mated with a clutch. That way I can have the control of a clutch, but the rapid response for shifts of a DCT... and lots of flexibility for tuning. Gee, that sounds like my two wheeled toy with a shift assist... ;)

True as far as number of gears go. Still, it's really not bad for a 2001 car to get that fuel consumption. No efficiency-increasing turbos on this thing

It's a 2001 Citroën Xsara Coupé VTR, 3-door/hatchback. Converted to also run LPG.

No, the whole point of a CVT is that the ratio changes to provide maximum fuel economy and power. You "choosing" the gear is just an illusion.

I understand how a CVT works, however Subarus CVT offers paddle shifters which let you manually select 8 pre-determined ratios for the cones
