I would say that it was the easily the best anime of 2013. My complete thoughts after the jump.

The characters were original and well written. I fell in love with the entire cast! The main group of protagonists mesh very well together and you can really feel the bond that they have with one another. Also while we're talking about characters I would like give props to the staff for managing to do something seen so rarely, having a GOOD, LIKABLE, AND BELIEVABLE homosexual romance. Too many shows feel that they don't have to write a good romance if they throw in a homosexual romance because they're being edgy and people will like them just for that. However never did it feel forced it just seemed to flow naturally with the story. So good on you Shin Sekai Yori.

The plot was extremely original with a very morally ambiguous story to the point that you didn't know if the main characters were the protagonists or the antagonists. It was a story revolving around characters that didn't have all the answers and very rarely were there any easy answers. It has a very "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" vibe to it. Overall it's a deeply philosophical show.

The art style was amazing and at times was on par with Koyoto animation works (really good). The scenes that take place at sun set are especially amazing!

The music was great. Though the sound track wasn't especially large the music always seemed to match the atmosphere. Dvorak's 9th symphony "From the New World", which I will not be able to hear now without turning into a pool of emotion, is also used a ton in the show.

So of you like anime and want to watch a completely underrated show check it out. It does take about 5 episodes to really get off the ground but stick with it and you're in for one of the best anime of this generation!

Jalopnik is awesome. I just finished watching it a few weeks ago as well. 10/10. I wouldn't say it was the best anime of 2013, but it was definitely the most interesting. The music was amazing...

I haven't watched a ton of anime this year (I mostly stick to manga) but my favorite for 2013 was probably Beyond the Boundary. How did this compare to that?

First thing you're going to notice is that "From the New World" takes itself a lot more seriously than "Beyond The Boundary" Though the first couple of episodes could pass as a slice of life show after they find the false minoshino everything goes to hell in a handbasket.

"From The New World" also isn't too much of an action series, yes there are action scenes but they're not the predominant focus of the show. The series is much more of a show about character interaction and dialogue.

As far as visuals go though "From The New World" wins hands down for me.

Go check it out. It's only 24 episodes and it's awesome!

I hear this Dvorak piece and all I can think of are two things: 1.) playing this in front of audiences as part of a regional youth symphony and 2.) Legend of the Galactic Heroes , which outside of the credits used nothing but classical and romantic music in its score.

Both are supernatural and both have phenomenal art and music. Kyoukai no Kanata was great, but the ending was half-assed, so I only gave it a 9/10.

Shin Sekai Yori is designed to unnerve the viewer. The art even lends itself to the tension built in the series. Shin Sekai yori had an amazing main character and a thought-provoking ending. I'd say its rlly far off from Kyoukai no Kanata in that there is no grand romance (albeit there is a lot of romance), no humor, and very little action. However, it is undoubtedly worth watching.
