I have not checked out the bike yet, but I talked him down to $550. The post says "like new" but not much else and one pretty crappy picture.
Anyone have any tips on what to lookout for when checking out a used mountain bike?
This will be my first mountain bike since the old Costco bike my parents got me who knows how many years ago, maybe sometime in the mid 90's.
Edit: Assuming stock these should be the components.

NP! go buy it. The only thing you might not like, is if you want to upgrade, some standards have changed since 2009. Depending. Newer handlebars are slightly fatter at the center, and they are now tapering steer tubes. If I was in your position, though, I would buy it and ride the hell out of it. Real quickly though, does it mention the components that are on it? Bad components could make it not worth it.

the danger with buying 5-year-old MTBs with suspensions is that those suspensions might not work well anymore, and the cost of repair + cost of used MTB can sometimes = cost of new MTB.
But don't let me talk you out of anything.

The 5 is the lower end of the rize. The components seem like mid range.

oh yeah, tips....
Check for oil leaking from shock. It may be in need of a rebuild. Those can be around $200. Check that it shifts smoothly through the gears. Check for any nicks in the shock pistons, as those will eat the seals. Check for nicks and dents in the frame, and those carbon fiber seat stays. try to wiggle the suspension linkages, and hop on to make sure they move smoothly. the rebuild isn't a huge deal IMO, but the others can be a deal breaker.

i was you like 4 years ago... didn't know much but a friend gave me the same advice. and here i am now 4 years later and STILL no MTB.

Just the usual shit... makes sure the derailleurs reach all gears, the rear brake can skid and the front brake can send you over the handlebars, the wheels are true, the suspension isn't shot, the fork isn't wiggly... Also make sure the fit is right for you because a poorly sized bike makes a sad man.

as long as the suspension was a good one at the time, and isn't in need of a rebuild, it should still work well. To test, get on, and give it a few good pushes. It is an air shock, so it might not be set up for your weight though. Things to check though, are any adjustment knobs if there are any. Check that they all work. A good shock shouldn't feel like a pogo stick. It should absorb bumps and jumps while not feeling like you are trying to jump in mud, or bouncing on a spring.

a bad start is still a start. if you want to get into riding just find yourself a 29er hardtail with hydraulic disk brakes and you're set for 90% of trails

That's a nice bike. As long as it fits you well and the suspension, wheels and brake rotors aren't hashed, I'd buy it. If the forks or rear shock isn't leaking it's a good, solid bike.
