Used trucks. that's really the only way now given a new truck with what you really need is 1/3 of the value of your house. So, a used reliable truck? At how many miles would you just say 'hell no' to that one and move on? they are stout vehicles as long as there's no factory defect flaws.....so at how high would you still buy?

Totally depends on the year make and model more than whether it is a truck.

My truck's got 229k and I'm planning on a 1600mile ski trip next month. I'm not worried at all *knocks compulsively on wood*

Miles don't really mean anything by itself. You can use a car until it has millions of miles on it if it has had the proper maintenance and care. Just like any used vehicle buy it is a buyer beware type mentality, a truck with 200,000 miles on it could be in better shape then one that has 50,000 miles and had been treated like shit. The other thing that needs to be considered is application and type of truck you are looking at. Is it a suv or a pickup? What was it used for before you bought it and what are you planning to use it for? So until the truck is about to give up the ghost I would say there are no miles at all that I would say that this is it the truck is done. There are too many variables to really make a judgement like that, it kind of needs to be a by case consideration.

I don't have max miles. As long as the car is maintained it will run forever.

Eventually that maintenance involves replacing literally everything. It also involves a huge amount of money, even if you DIY. That 3,000,000 mile Volvo P1800 has had the engine rebuilt a few times, and the owner keeps almost one of everything as a spare just in case.

I look at used cars/trucks with over 150k miles with a questionable eye. Unless the ad shows a list of parts replaced recently, I'm iffy on it. I bought my Montero 4WD in April with 150k miles and I drive it carefully. 4WDs are sensitive to missed maintenance and I get nervous every time I smell gas or oil - it's never mine but still...

Yes, but everything doesn't just fail at once. If you keep up with maintenance and replace components as they are needed it's no more expensive than having monthly car payments.

My AC guy has 330,000 (!) on his 1994 Ram V8 (not diesel).

Probably 250k. Even if it was maintained your looking at possible engine and tranny r ebuilds. I just dont have time for that ATM. If it was already done I might consider it.

Miles really don't bother me. It's all about the maintenance, condition, etc.

At that point a new car is a bigger convenience, and with insurance, if it gets wrecked you'll get a hell of a lot more money for another car.

Sure, if your car is just an appliance and you don't have any attachment to it.

A pickup truck is an appliance. Thanks for insinuating I'm a car-hating Consumer Reports loving Toyota buyer, though.
