...why people in the UK keep banging on about how lots of American cars are just too big for our country, here's a little clip. Most roads aren't like this, but a good few of them are. Especially out in the country. For reference, that's a Peugeot 106 in front. It's a good deal smaller than a MINI.

Fewer and fewer of our roads are like that these days, though. It used to be less of an exception, but these days all the main roads are plenty wide enough, and in fact our cars have got about as big as a lot of what's on the road in the US.

It's been the case for a while, I think, but it's really noticeable now I'm driving the E30. It's six inches narrower than a Golf, and more on a par with superminis - half an inch wider than a Fiat 500, the Toyota IQ's half an inch wider, and so-on.

Highly doubt any Americans care about the dinky roads over there.

Most don't, but some have wondered why a lot of American cars don't sell very ell over here, and also why we don't really understand the 'mahoosive truck' thing that's big in the States.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. The new Alfa Giulietta is as long as my 156, and a little taller.

You're right about the bigger roads being plenty wide enough as well. It's just really country roads and the old streets in cities.

Still, things are generally narrower here. I saw a Chevrolet Caprice at the scrapyard recently and it overhung the parking space by a good foot and a half.

Things were narrower here, maybe going back that way slightly. The last gen Mondeo was the same width as a Caprice, which hasn't changed much in that regard. The latest Mondeo's slimmed down by an inch, apparently.
