Surprisingly James May was the clear winner yesterday (my pick as well). With roughly 20 votes to Jeremy's 10. Poor Richard only got a few, but then I don't think anyone really hates him, and I'm sure he's tops when it comes to little kids and housewives. The Stig got a few as well as non-Top Gear driver extraordinaire Sabine Schmidt.
Today it's two for Thursday (that doesn't sound right). How bout them black wheels? Have they jumped the shark? were they never cool in the first place? or are they eternally bad ass?
And to that extent how bout flat paint? I get the impression that this trend it on the outs, but I wouldn't paint my dream hot rod any other color than flat black.

Black wheels = yes
Flat black paint = no, because doesn't know how to spray real black paint

I think it looks right on certain cars, matte paint that is, on hot rods/rat rods.. absolutely. On newer cars..not so much. However, all this is up to personal preference. That's the beauty of being a car person, IMHO

I don't know, black wheels are on a car-by-car basis IMO.
It looks great on Lambos, and on most white cars.
I made a White Enzo with Black Wheels on GT6 it looked great!

Black wheels can look great on the right car.
I'm always for matte paint. There is a lady who lives near me with a matte gray SL500 and I drool each time I see it. The car looks like the one pictured.

I like black wheels on almost anything. Flat black works sometimes. Together? I dunno. I like my flat black cars to have red wheels.

Yes to both, but not at the same time. Having such paint also isn't an excuse for not keeping your car clean.

I like white cars with white wheels
Matte paint looks ghetto to me:
Though I will say the Ferrari looks cool with the silver window trim. It gives the car a vintage look.

I'm gonna go ahead and say that I think I do like black wheels, having put them on my own car.

Oh yeah because most people spray "real" black paint themselves anyways. I'll respect a guy with a crappy matte black paintjob that he's done himself a 1000x times more than someone with a perfect gloss black paintjob that some shop has done for him.

It's very, very difficult to make gloss black paint look good. I see flat black as a cop-out when it's used on a whole car, especially when it's done by a shop. I'll give props to anyone who paints their own ride over paying a shop to do so, but none of the pictures posted above were done in someone's garage.

Not a huge fan of either, but I recently put some black wheels on the M3. It's the right look with the dark grey paint I think.

A really nice satin like matte black can look good. Those are rare in person. Most end up just looking like a shitty paint job. Do it right or do something else.
Black wheels can look good. They tend to overwhelm darker paint schemes though unless there are a lot of contrasting accents.

Patient Zero of the modern flat black paint trend: the Sport Compact Car Project Silvia (which was of course a 240SX with a Silvia front clip). They spray painted it with regular old canned spray paint.
All of their writeups: Part 1 , Part 2 , Part 3 , Part 4 , Part 5 , Part 6 , Part 7
Kind of ironic that somehow an old Nissan painted with cans by a tuner magazine ended up influencing Lamborghinis.

I'm still a fan of both. But, just like any other paint / rim combo sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

True true, but I'd have to give the rod the benifit of a doubt and say that it was maaaaybe painted by the owner.

Yes, this is correct.
I think black wheels will probably always look good in the right application.

Uh I have a pretty good feeling that all the cars you posted are of cars with paint damage and not intentional matte paint.

Flat paint bad.
Seriously, I was over it before it was over. Now it's really, really over. Not a fan at all. I like my shiny objects to be shiny.

Black wheels = OK if not on a totally murdered out ride. I am done with the blacked out glass and full murder effect. I want contrast in the style.
Matte paint = Nope. Tired of it. The three or so cars it looks good on are enough, I don't want to try to tell if the car is in primer or full paint.

A small table, perhaps. IMO, that diffuser is too small. A car full of fail.
In all seriousness, I wonder how fast that thing goes? I'll get it's fun, no matter how ridiculous it looks.

Black wheels: Yes
Flat paint: No. I think flat paint has run its course. It looks tacky on most any build imho.

Oddly, I was discussing this with my wife today since I was thinking about doing a black plasti dip on my car's wheels. I find the stock rims on my Mustang extremely meh, but don't have the scratch to invest in new rims right now, so figured maybe plasti dip would be a cheap way to liven up the wheels.
Thing is, even I'm not sure how I feel about black wheels. When I see them, part of me thinks "badass" and another part thinks "tacky." It also of course depends on the car. I feel like black wheels could look good on my Dark Shadow Gray Mustang, but I'm just not sure. (Of course, the advantage of plasti dip is that I could just try it out already and take it off if I don't like it.) So, I dunno.
I guess it's like anything else design-based, where it works great if used appropriately, but looks horrible and lame if employed without a tasteful eye.

high end cars that have matte black paint are cool but in general i think its played out. it was ruined by crappy cars with a primer paint job, dark tints , VHT nightshade on the lights and steelies / muli lug pattern ebay wheels.

Normal Matte seems like lazy $5 rattle can, where as nice perfect matte black is like $3k vinyl wrap pro job, and I don't really dig either. I like matte colors though. And I'm a big fan of matte black rims
