Kinja'd!!!

My brother is not the best driver. He speeds, he passes when he shouldn't, rarely turns his blinkers on, gets a little road rage and comes to sudden stops. But really, I'm more scared about his indifference towards his car's condition, he gives zero fucks! So I offered (insisted) to take his SUV with a friend for a couple of days and give it's much needed maintenance. Here's what we discovered and fixed.

- Oil, he had none whatsoever, and he had just taken the car to San Diego and Las Vegas! How did it not break down?!

- Antifreeze, same as oil, empty.

- Brake Discs, they were uneven, due to my brother's awful braking, that car shaked way too much when I stopped, even if I was just going 5 miles an hour. I took them to a mechanic to even them out.

- Brake Pads, they were on their last string of life.

- Wiper Fluid, not a big deal, it was empty though.

- Air Filter, black as night and full of pebbles

- Console, it had been loose for about 2 years, fixed it and cleaned up most of the mess inside the console, 5 years worth of crumbs and dried liquids.

There were a lot of other details, I decided to give the keys back to my sister-in-law since I knew she was the one that would apreciate it, and even more after seeing the pictures of fungus inside the console.

My brother may still be driving with his pregnant drive like a douchebag, but at least he's doing it in a much safer and clean car. I even liked the Montero after I was done with it, I really didn't want to give back the keys.

I saw a lot of cool cars yesterday while riding around town looking for the air filter, including a Phaeton the same color as the one above. I had never seen one in person, now I really, really want one.

Good on you, on being a great brother, and family member. You may have just prevented an accident!

I am curious however, what do you mean he had no oil? He had literally 0 liters/quarts? If so, Mitsubishi oughta be proud of their engines durability.

I love Phaetons.

I had a roommate with a 90s taurus that made a "clattering" sound one day. Checked the oil and to my surprise the only "reading" I got was a small dot at the bottom......So we replaced the filter and added oil and it was fine. Ran for 3 more years without major incident.

What happened at the 3 year mark?

My Montero needs valve cover gaskets so when I notice the oil pressure drop below a mark on the gauge I know to check it. Great SUVs, I love mine except the stupid side hinged door.

Sold it to someone's kid for a first car since the tires were wearing out and he was moving to chicago and didn;t want to buy new tires and do other repairs. Don't remember how much he sold it for, but it was basically sold as "any moment now, this car could end up in a scrap heap"

Thanks! That means a lot, as long as they're a bit safer.

Not literally, but almost, a liter if not less.

I'm guessing my brother knew, but he just didn't bother. I never really liked it until now, probably because it was messy and the ride was a bit off before yeasterday. Now I want to take it on my next camping trip.

The only thing that annoys me about the Montero is it isn't being sold in the US, so finding parts is a bit tricky. Parts in Mexico are expensive and they're rarely in stock. In the US, there are about 3 variants for each part, so I have to take a sample and check the serial number of that part.

Wow that is incredible. How much does it normally take?
