Okay, I love the sound of my I4, but since it is basically my DD during the summer I would like to install some audio. How hard would it be to wire something up and what should I buy? I would like to have FM, but if I would need to install an antenna, I could do without. So basically, I would just like something that can take auxiliary from my phone and send it to speakers in the rear. I already have two spare speakers.

Do you want something period correct?

Kinja'd!!!

Here's a diagram for wiring up a Line-in into the Becker unit.

Or something aftermarket?

Wire up the rear speakers to this: LP-2020A+ Lepai Tripath Class-T Hi-Fi Audio Mini Amplifier with Power Supply

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Add a 3.5mm jack to the port in the rear and you're all set.

Sort of want something more permanent, but still a great idea. That is what the previous owner did.

Don't need period correct, I will just hide it in the clove or under my seat. Looking at the diagram, would I really wire something directly from the battery. I have an aux knob in my car that isn't being used, but would need rewiring. I could just wire a unit to that. Also, would I need to get an amplifier, or could I get away with a simple standalone unit? Sorry of something doesn't make sense, I don't know audio nor wiring that well.

But in all seriousness are you looking for something that will slot into the dash and look "correct", or are you just looking to get music? Are there speakers in the car and you just need to replace the head unit, or do you need to add speakers too?

Crutchfield is a pretty good resource for car audio. www.crutchfield.com

Back in 1996 or so when my stereo went out I just got one of these, a DC adapter, a portable CD play (with another DC adapter...I suppose you'd use your fancy phone), and one of those 3.5 mm to tape things. Worked well enough for a semester. Lots of wires all over the place but nothing permanent. You could probably pick up the whole set-up for 5 bucks today.

This sounds like a great idea if all I would need is this and the speakers, but how exactly dose this get power from the car. It looks as if it comes with a 120v wall plug?

I don't really care about period correct as long as I can hid most of it. As far as speakers, I have newer aftermarket two 6 or 7 in speakers. I really just want a unit that makes the connection from the battery to my phone the simplest way possible.

You're introducing the audio signal before the 4-channel factory amp and using a small signal amplifier (like you find in powered mics) to boost the sound from the headphone jack on the ipod. No separate amp necessary.

Where do you live? I came across a 2002 the same color while out riding on Saturday (assuming the pic is of your 2002).

Is there wiring in place between the rear speakers and the dash? That makes things a lot easier. Most new head units have USB and/or AUX inputs, so hooking up a phone or other media player shouldn't be a problem. If you've got a local car audio shop they might be worth talking to. Most seem to be pretty decent about answering questions from DIYers.

In both my E9 and my Lincoln, I decided I didn't need radio, so I had a good audio guy install a plug hidden along the carpet line for USB/iPhone input, with a rheostat and power switch (hidden under the dash on the Lincoln, in a custom facing on the E9). Works great.

I also added speakers, but if I were running the original speakers it would be almost invisible. Actually, even with the additional speakers on the kickplates of the Lincoln and the sub under the front seat it is difficult to detect.

The period Becker suggested by BTU is a great piece but I ultimately decided I didn't need something like that.

Any decent car stereo shop would be able wire it up for you fairly cheap and easily.

I read in the comments that you are thinking about hiding a modern head-unit under the seats or something. While this is somewhat of a hassle for everyday use, it's also the worst possible solution IMHO.

A lot of people/shops/companies have adressed this problem and are offering either modern head-units that are made to look classic, or refurbished old ones with modern connectivity. The modern ones which are made to look classic are cheap, but they only are a compromise. When turned off, they look somewhat period correct, but most of them have LCDs with green or orange fluorescent lighting.

I think that your 02 deserves something more classy. Like a Becker Mexico with hidden I-stuff connectivity.

Petrolicious had a little something on that topic: http://www.petrolicious.com/does-your-radi…

It deserves much more than I can afford. At this point I am a college student partially paying for it myself. I am lucky enough to have the car and make due. So all other costs are kept to a minimum. Basically looking for something not too permanent but also doesn't trash up the car. Thanks for the link though. In due time she will receive what she deserves. As for now, I would just like to have a 'luxury' while driving.

Well, not close then. I figured it was a long shot because the driver was roughly 65 years old, but you never know.

I have the speakers out of the car, and I do have wiring. I wouldn't be any problem installing them and running the wiring under the carpet. I will definitely talk to people at an audio shop, but my mechanic knows 2002s and my car in and out. I would get an idea of what I want, do as much as I could, and then if I had any problems just consult him.

It uses a 12v 2amp power supply. You should be able to wire this to the 12v in the car (I'd put in an in-line fuse and maybe a capacitor).
