My family and I went up to Palm springs for vacation. We are on our way home (don't worry, I'm not driving and posting). After leaving a gas station, this was our average MPG in our subaru Forester. Who needs a Prius? It's now sitting at a steady 38.7 (!)

My xB was getting 40+ on the drive to Florida for my honeymoon. That's definitely a great feeling.

And it's not like the car is empty. We have three people and probably 150 lb of shit

The honeymoon or the gas mileage?

What year is the Forester? I'm assuming this is the nonturbo version, smaller engine. I've been looking at them for a while. I may have to pull the trigger.

A lot of cars these days are super efficient on the highway.

Hybrids are totally unnecessary for anyone who has a fair bit of highway miles in their commute. They only make sense for people that mostly drove in the city.

I can see why the Prius is so popular in LA. If you work and live in LA then you almost never get to drive at highway speeds. Even if you take the freeway it's a parking lot during rush hour. I would go insane there.

But this is 18 mpg over the EPA estimate. And yeah, I completely understand the prius in a driving city like la

2010 non turbo premium. And the four speed auto, which isn't great but sooooo much better than a CVT. Plus it's pretty Damn fun to drive. We generally average about 22 mpg in LA traffic. In nearly 50,000 miles, it has not once broken down. Aside from dealer maintenance and oil changes, we have spent less than $50 on extra fixes, aside from a $120 cargo cover.

Wow 18 mpg over EPA? That is crazy!

I think the most I've got over EPA in any of my cars was about 9 MPG. You doubled that!

Yeah, that's about the best I've done previously. I felt the need to post this because it's so insanely high

That is really awesome!!!

I love road trips. They remind you how awesome driving is. Open roads = good milage and good times.

But if I did it again, I'd try for a turbo. Getting on the freeway, I've had a few oh shit moments where I put my foot all the way down and nothing, and I mean NOTHING, happened. The transmission makes you put your foot all the way down before it kicks down, and that can be downright dangerous. It needs more torque, which the turbo has. Test drive both and see.

My brother who doesn't let me stop anywhere= not. That's why I don't really road trip with my family generally, or just my mom.

I thought dealer maintenance wasn't until 63-75k? That's awesome. I have an 08 Impreza 71k, no problems at all. I get about 26-28mpg on avg on the highway. I drive a lot and so does my wife (all highway) so even at 39mpg that is amazing gas mileage.

The rental Passat I had when I was in Florida a few weeks ago had an average of 41.6 when I picked it up.

It had an average of 29.1 when I returned it :) There was a ton of toll booths on 528 going to Cocoa Beach, and apparently my EZ Pass is no good in Florida so I had to stop at each and every one. Having to stop on a highway with a 70 MPH speed limit means that the highway department is actively challenging you to see how fast a rental car can get back up to speed. The rest of the killing the gas mileage was the constant stop and go between Give Kids The World Village and Disney/Universal.

I mean oil changes and air filters, oil filters, etc. I think it will have well over 200k miles when we get rid of it

I recently drove from Rapid City SD to Kansas City and back to Omaha before stopping for the night. I averaged about 35-38 mpg at 65-75 mph (average speed from Omaha to Kansas City and back to Omaha) while averaging about 25 mpg at about 90-115 mph (Rapid City to Omaha, except for congestion around Sioux Falls). Hybrids are great for cities. If I had a Prius or Volt, my entire commute would be electric (live about 5 miles from work) and since I don't pay for electricity, I could drive for free.

Oh ok. You had me worried for a second that I missed something haha. I agree on the 200k I'm running this sucker into the ground. I think next year I'll update my wifes car to the Forester.

Got over 40 once driving Sacramento to San Diego in the e39. Ever since, I automatically assume anyone with a hybrid is a blithering idiot.

I'm averaging 46 mpg over 30,000 mi in a 2011 prius. driven largely on the interstate, the absolute worst tank of gas I've ever had was 38mpg (calculated, not indicated), best @54mpg.

After leaving the gas station? Meaning you had just reset that, right?

That's not exactly accurate, and it's going to drop as soon as you do some more driving.

My WRX reads 35 MPGs not soon after leaving gas stations and steadily drops as it correctly averages my MPGs.
