Do people REALLY take the free garbage on Craigslist?

For a very short time of only about a week when I still had my car, I'd browse the Free section for electronics and scrap metal. It always amazes me how often people put up ads for "free fire wood" and post pictures of a tree that fell in their yard saying you can keep it if you come and get it yourself. This also comes in the form of fill dirt, rocks, live trees, and sometimes even dead leaves. Do people actually go out of their way to give a stranger hours of unpaid labor in exchange for a few muddy twigs?

Depends what it is, but yes. One man's fallen tree is another man (with a chainsaw)'s free firewood. I've seen these ads from both sides in the past, even just on here.

Here in London it's a big enough city that people will go around picking up everything you can make a profit off, and even so someone will come pick up a load of crap as long as they can swap labour for money.

I've wondered that myself - but then you people who offer to come pick up your used appliances (fridge, etx) for free so they can scrap it.

Yes. I posted a pile of rocks for free on craigslist, and by the end of the day they were gone. Some guy came and picked them all up, loaded them in his truck, and drove them back to his house. I didn't have to do anything. I literally sat on my ass and watched someone clean up my backyard for me, for free. It really works.

Round here they come and pick them up, refurbish them, and sell them on. Depending on the state of the market, you can usually get someone to pay you for your broken appliance.

Yep. When we moved 4 years ago I had about 50 moving boxes, used exactly once, to move 3 miles. Seemed a shame to recycle as well as a pain to schlep them to the recycling center so I put 'em on Craigslist for free. They were gone in 90 minutes...

Not in my area. Kinda..
"Free" fire wood usually means "I need a tree cut down" and any furniture is usually Ikea crap that's seen at least one snowfall.
On the flip side..
Back in March I answered an ad for a free 7 year old Black Labrador with all papers.
I couldn't be happier with that find.

Yes. As you've seen posted, I know of others who have gotten rid of stuff by posting it for free. No fuss, no muss. One man's trash is another man's treasure.

Rocks for decorating a yard car be pretty expensive. cause us quite for rock to covers the dirt areas around my house. People even give away dirt on craigslist. Dirt isn't as expensive but still can be costly when try to get a large bulk of it.

I don't look at Craigslist enough to notice the free ads, but I do subscribe to the digest version of my local Freecycle mailing list and have used it to both acquire and get rid of various things.

I haven't used it for dirt, it I've always bought, but I did use it to get rid of some furniture and one time just in case, I got some decorative bricks.

I think that's what this guy was trying to do, he was building a decorative wall if I remember correctly. It was pretty expensive to buy rock, he said.

I'm not sure about craigslist, but a few times when I lived on reasonable busy streets, I've stuck all sorts of really beat up, crappy furniture, and other household stuff in the front yard with a "Free" sign, and it usually disappeared pretty quick, so it wouldn't surprise me if people do.

I have searched craigslist for leaves or old rotten straw bales before too when I was doing yard work and odd jobs, for customers who wanted to mulch their yard or garden. One lady wanted to mulch an entire quarter acre, and it took a while and many van loads to gather enough straw bales and leaves. One person's trash is another's treasure as they say.

A refrigerator that doesn't cool all that well makes a great brew fridge for home brewers FYI.

I've been sort of trolling CL for a cheap fridge. We don't pay for electricity and my wife needs a place to store breast milk.... Plus I can store sodas in it so it's win-win. Put that happy right in my living room - I'll be a white trash millionaire.

There is one guy near me that advertises free Bamboo. Someone called him out on it a while back and noted that he's just looking for free yard work.
