The other day I !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! about my wife's 07 Passat 2.0T Wagon having a problem.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Here's an update with video:

Sorry for the portrait orientation. After further thought, it seems like it's likely a broken CV axle. Much better than a bad transmission. Warranty will cover it so it's only going to be the $100 deductible and a day or two off the road.

Any other possible diagnoses?

no leaks? I have seen these seep just enough fluid to not work, and of course there is no dipstick. Easy to fill if you have a pump to get up in the hole. CV could do it though

I could definitely agree with a broken CV part or output shaft type of piece.

I'm very curious to hear more about your problem and solution, we have an '08 Passat Wagon. 90K on ours, just came back from 1400 mile round trip Boston to Pittsburgh, put snow tires on it this year and boy am I glad we did! It ended up snowing for about 70% of the trip, both ways! 6 spd manual, but the CV shafts are probably similar. Ours had a CV boot replaced this summer (before we drove it to northern michigan and back to Boston)
