(updated picture, I think)
My dad is looking at a second car. He wants something used, cheap, versatile & economical. So far he is leaning to a Chevy Captiva. Go ahead you can google it, I'll wait......Yeah, I didn't know what it was either. Mexican made fleet vehicle that shares an older platform with the Saturn Vue, Equinox, and SRX.
Do you guys think it's a good/bad idea? Have any other options?
He's 60+
Currently daily drives a Buick Lucerne, and likes it.
Past cars for reference (that I remember):
'99 Bonneville
'91 Delta 88 Royale
'88 Chevy 1500 Stepside (4WD, 350)
'84 Delta 88
4 different Chrysler Cordobas (at least) (yes they had leather) (he loved these things)

I actually like the look of it, as much as I could ever imagine liking something called a "Chevy Captiva". What country is he in that this is available for purchase???

COnsidering a lot of people like the VUE and equinox that the captiva shares a platform with, I'd say he'll like it. A lot of older people I know own them and like them so they must be easy to use.
Two things though
1) The SRX is NOT on this platform. The Saab 9-4X used this platform though (SRX is the CTS chassis)
2) The captiva he's looking at does NOT look like the one in your picture. It looks like this

He's in the US. It's only available used to the public. Only sold new for fleet use.

Thanks. He did mention that it's real easy to get in and out of. I hope I never buy a car based on that criteria.
Still not too bad looking.

Interesting! I've never seen this (as pictured in your post) before in my life.
This is the American Captiva I'm familiar with. I didn't know it had been updated. The older one, below, is like the uglier sister of the Vue.

What's wrong with the Buick Encore? It's a more upscale version of the Captiva.

Price. This is a used fleet vehicle. Under 30k for under 12k, with remainder of warranty.

Why a CUV? Did he indicate he wanted one? If not I'd recommend a car.

We got those in Opel guise. A friend's dad got one and had it exported to Tunisia, his home country. We drove around in it a little and it was, well, hm..., a vehicle. This one hada really nice leather interiour, but the cheap-ish plastics instantly killed any illusions of this being a luxury vehicle of the Audi/Merc/Bimmer kind. It's not class leading in any way, it's not bad either. I guess it can be a great car to people who don't care that much about cars.

Apparently when you hit 70, that becomes a major selling point. My grandma used to love monte carlos ever since they came out. Her last car was an impala because she couldn't open the huge doors anymore. She stopped driving after that but still has a picture of her first monte - a blue 71' with chrome wheels.

Upon further research, it appears as though the Chevy Captiva your father is looking at is not the one you show above.
Here is the link to the 2014 Chevy Captiva fleet vehicle. It's the ugly one I pictured.

I would like to know where this new updated Captiva can be found!

Upon even further research, the image you posted is of the "Chevy Captiva", sold (under one brand or another) in Australia, Asia, and the Middle East.
The one sold in the Americas is technically called the "Chevy Captiva Sport" (pictured in my post above) and is still sold looking like the old Vue with a Chevy face. I'm pretty sure that's the one you can find used here.

He is looking for a CUV. I tried to talk him out of it, but he likes the seating position and versatility.

Sooo according to the internets, this is the U.S. Captiva. Just a rebadged Vue, since Saturn died. Which makes a lot more sense, because I've only ever seen one Euro Captiva in metro Detroit and it was M plates.

But coming from a rental fleet it's gotta be a rode-hard-put-up-wet 30k miles...

edit - damn you Kinja and your double posting nonsense...

Clear it up. New (2nd gen) SRX (2010-) shares platform with equinox and GMC terrain. The old SRX (2004-2009) shared platform with CTS. Five years have passed since then.

The Encore is an upscale version of the Opel Mokka, which is on the Gamma II platform (the same platform as the Sonic). It has no relation to the Chevrolet Captiva /Saturn Vue / Opel Antara, which are on the Theta Platform.

Thanks for the clarification.

Ugh, no please no no no. Not the Captiva. It is not captivating in any way.
The best car for your dad is this:
The 2014 Chevy Impala.

Current SRX is on the Theta Premium architecture which is very similar to the Theta/Epsilon of the Equinox/Terrain/Captiva. The CTS based SRX you are referring to was the previous generation.

I have driven a bunch of these and have always been impressed. A little heavy but older people love that heavy feeling. Drives relatively small even for what it is. Comfortable highway cruiser as well with decent technology. It will not overwhelm with technology which is good for the older crowd.

Yeah, I thought the 9-4X and SRX were related more closely than the turbo V6. But they are on their own variant of the chassis instead of the ones used by the Vue and others.
