Welcome to One Car Garage, in which I choose a manufacturer, and you decide one single vehicle that they make or made (no matter how old, no matter how exclusive) to live with for the rest of your life. This is your only vehicle, and all expenses are paid for, including price of entry, insurance, gas, etc.

Fun times were had in America with !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , but today we’re heading over to England to browse the off-road oriented selection provided by Land Rover.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

As much as I love the Defender, I've heard horror stories about how unbearable they are to drive for extended periods of time because of the lack of amenities that cater to any sort of bodily comfort. That’s why I've decided to go with a series P38 Range Rover. Now, I don’t know the convention in which these were specced out, but if I could get a 4.6 litre V8 mated to a 5 speed manual transmission, I’d be quite satisfied. Now, I don’t know a whole lot about the goods and the bads of the various generations of Range Rovers, so maybe I’d be getting myself into a terrible terrible situation with my decision. Frankly, I just happen to find the P38 to be the most attractive of the Ranges!

Evoque. Posh spice knows whats up. If I wanted to offroad I wouldn't do it in a Land Rover. Ain't nobody got money for that.

The original, 3door Range Rover. Would do engine swap for a modern diesel.

My mother owned a blue P38 and now has a red L322 like this one. A shame many are rolling on blinged out wheels as given the proper wheel and tire combo, they are quite capable off-road performers.

I honestly prefer the P38, but the newer ones drive really nice.

Either an original V8 Range Rover or a fully Safari-ed out Series Lightweight.

If you want to go with a Range Rover, P38 is a risky choice. Going to have a lot of electronic issues in that era. 1995 Range Rover Classic is your best bet, it was right before they switched to the P38 and there are few electronics to go bad and they had worked out most the mechanical issues by then.

For my choice, I am partial to the Series Land Rovers so I would go with a nice 2a 109" RHD with a safari top, maybe a diesel maybe not that is a tough choice.

Not really much to choose from, but I'd have a Disco 2 facelift:

An early 3rd gen Range would be a lot more luxurious, but it's also more expensive, and these are utilitarian vehicles. So I'd stick with a facelifted 2nd gen Discovery, in V8 trim, with mods for off roading. (Because let's face it, why do you want to be a poseur?).

Too much, maybe: no need for so many lights, front bar is too big, wheels look ugly and I don't need a roof carrier, that's why I already hate the 4-door model. Also, it couldn't be white.
Other than that, yes. You get the point.

We do alot of night wheeling in my group and I'm normally lead vehicle so the lights come in handy, bull bar came with the truck and has saved my front on a couple of occastions. Wheels are 50/50 for me but I have a matching set and am too cheep to replace them. We do a lot of overlanding so the roof rack is great for Jerrycans and supplies.

A Bowler EXR-S doesn't count, does it?

Well OK then, like many I'm having to choose between an honest Defender or a kitted-out Range Rover. But actually, considering that the new RR (the pukka one rather than the Sport) is just as good off-road and would be far less unpleasant when I'm old and withering, it's actually a pretty easy choice IMO.
