"Things you should know: Alfa trumpets a base curb weight of fewer than 2100 pounds , but U.S.-bound models will be about 2650 , which factors in two side and two knee airbags, other mandated equipment, and a number of options that will likely be standard here, including air conditioning, power seats, and parking sensors." Emphasis mine. What the fuck? 550lbs?

Part of me is like, "No! Because Racecar!"

But more of me is like, "I like my knees, listening to the radio, and being cool on hot summer days."

The power seats and parking sensors can go, but I know actual buyers will demand those features.

Once again 'Murica is screwed, because land of the freedom. Such stupid regulations is why you don't get a lot of the things we get here in Europe. On one side it is funny on the other it is really sad. Ok, safety on one hand, but AC and power seats, wtf? This reiterates my point that we don't deserve good things anymore, because the people that will buy this car are spoiled, when in order to guarantee that you will sell the cars, you must put things that are not needed. This is why Lotus will never ever successed, people expect AC, power setas and other "comforts". And they will go and buy a Cayman and not the 4C or a Lotus, because it offers those "comforts" along with a powerfull car, for them is: fuck lightness, we want cupholders.

They don't make the rules, they just have to obey them.

I don't understand the resentment towards having A/C. Try making it through a summer south of the Mason-Dixon line without A/C and then we can chat about how unnecessary A/C is. I've done it, and it's not fun.

Doesn't matter.

This is a sports car that weighs as much as most B segment base cars yet will be much better to drive.

Go ahead, safety the shit out of us if it means this car can actually exist on our shores.

Not in the rules:

".....and a number of options that will likely be standard here, including air conditioning, power seats, and parking sensors. A “quiet” exhaust with a muffler will be offered. Whether the U.S. will even get the open pipes ...."

I live in a country that have 4 full seasons, were you can have 40C(104F) or -15C(5F). I drove a car that didn't have AC, now with my CLK, I use the climate control only when in traffic jams in the heat or on the highway, which is not very often, I prefer back roads when going somewhere. Yes it is a convinience, but it is a freaking' real sports car. We have those options here in Europe, but are optional. If somebody wants it, they will buy it. I will not, because the 4C will not be a DD. So I can get away for being sweaty on the weekedns when I will drive the car and also still have two windows,

Seats, AC and airbags are the worst. Sensors are literally nothing to add on.

I'd wager the seats and AC added the most.

Oh most defiantly, but on such a small 2 seat car, why bother with the power seats?

Well, that's American buyers' fault for wanting frivolous creature comforts on everything :-P

I bet none of the production models weigh under 2100 pounds or close to it. Its not like the Euro zone is a bastion of safety-free regulation (see e.g. the plague that is the pedestrian safety requirements). A better explanation is the company PR shills got a bit out of hand. To meet US and Euro crash standards (and those of the insurance industry), it takes weight. Plus people spending over $50k for a new car expect certain features.

tl/dr Alfa was full of crap for the get go

I'm an American, I buy stuff, and I want loud exhaust. An alfa that weighs 2200lbs is also something I want, I can't believe all that crap weighs that much.

"lied" is a harsh term how about "massively under delivered on an absurd promise that was probably not remotely possible in 2014 on a mass market $50k car".

Still its damn sexy. And I would happy buy a base C7 Vette instead.

Perhaps part of the difference in perceptions also comes in the form of the fact that most people here in the States are going to DD their 4C, if Boxsters/Caymans are anything to go off of. There are plenty of people here that will buy one just as a weekend car, but by in large, in the US, a car of this ilk is going to be daily driven.

Kinja'd!!!1

What if I don't want AC, parking sensors, electric seats, and the rest of the useless crap except the stupid airbags?

Alfa needs to realize that we are just like Europe, we want low spec cars and not everything from Europe has to be marketed as "luxury"

What on earth did you expect. Parking Sensors? Go to hell. Power Seats, they weigh a ton. Factor in the fact that some fat asses girlfriend weighs in an at around 200lbs and suddenly your lithe carbon fiber sports car is 3100lbs. God damn it. WHY ? If we wanted a luxury car we would BUY A FUCKING LUXURY CAR.
