"practical applications" can eat me. Some axial engines, yes, though not particularly this one. This one was a goofiness of 1961 that never made it, but at 12 power pulses per rev. and supposedly good for more than 10,000rpm, this thing must have shrieked.

I was talking to an aero engineering student that pulled one of these apart the other day, he was very impressed with how well built they were, they really have decent power density too.
