It doesn't do anything if you are an author here. If you are not an author but are commenting it'll make your comments visible here automatically, the same way being followed by Jalopnik keeps you out of the grey on the front page.

Someone followed you for Oppo, don't know who. I'm just saying it doesn't make any difference if you are already an author. Actually, I think any author can follow anyone for Oppo.
Look for this little drop down menu. I think you should have the follow option.
