It's funny (sad, more like) that I have been going to visit grandma in California almost every year for 30 years and I have never been to Mulholland drive or any other things other than those that were on my dad's list of "things we always do because I have no sense of adventure."

Now that I have my own family (wife, three kids) I'm trying to branch out a little. I'll be in the Sherman Oaks area around the third week in October. Any tips/sights I should on the lookout for? Whatever the rental company has that day will be what we are driving, so I can't promise it will be anything fun.

Mulholland drive only has a couple of good turns. It's residential so there is a lot of traffic. It's really not worth it.

Angles Crest hwy, about 20 minutes northeast of Mulholland, is the most amazing road I've ever driven. Perfect pavement, incredible scenery and all the other cars on the road will pull over to let faster traffic by. If I was able to publish posts on Oppo I would share a video I filmed there. Simply breathtaking.

I live in Sherman Oaks! Like Turner950s said, Mulholland Dr. has tons of houses and traffic on it. It's a far cry from what it was a few decades ago evidently. If you're doing it with the family do it at dusk on the weekend if possible, and do it for the overlooks. Google them before you go, there's no warning for any of them so you'll miss them easily.

Angeles Crest is a great drive, but a bit out of the way. Good drives would also be any of the canyon routes from the west valley over the mountains to Malibu. Topanga Canyon is a main route, still fun but can have traffic. Mullholand Hwy is great, but a longer route. Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon is a very good choice, but can suffer from traffic. Check Google maps and that will all make sense. Just look at the roads going South from the 101 to the ocean. If you do any of those, I would suggest stopping for Lunch/Dinner at Malibu Seafood.

Malibu Seafood

25653 Pacific Coast Hwy, Malibu, CA 90265

(Also, of all the people renting Mustang Convertibles to drive the coast...this guys doing it right....)

Price's are quite reasonable (for seafood in Malibu), probably the only place I'd send a family of five to. They serve simple fish and chips (or chicken fingers) up to much more extravagant seafood. It's very casual, and all the seating is on the patio overlooking the ocean (so bring a jacket).

If you're here on the weekend, Supercar Sunday is 7am-10am at:

Westfield Promenade Mall

6100 Topanga Canyon Boulevard Woodland Hills, CA 91367

I recommend Cars and Coffee in Irvine to everyone I know coming here, but it's a pretty far drive from Sherman Oaks if you're here from out of town. Supercar Sunday is a great event, and much closer.

I've never been there, but there is an old railroad museum in Burbank over by the LA Zoo (not a great zoo). Might be worth researching. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Hope you have a great trip!

And here's a video of a Fiat drive at Angeles Crest I shot a few months ago:

Thanks for the tip. I'll look into Angels Crest hwy. Looks like an amazing road. With my family in the car, I don't know how much spirited driving I would be able to do (my daughter would love it, but my wife gets carsick easily) but I would drive it for the scenery.

Sounds like I need to spend some time on Google maps. Since we'll be there in October, I don't know if taking a dip in the ocean will be tolerable so I'm going to be looking for picnic spots and great scenery. I have been by the rail museum many times, but have never stopped.

There is a good chance we will still be there Sunday morning, I'll see if the supercar event is a possibility.

Thanks for the tips! This vacation has the makings of a good one.
