I suppose the future of the Xterra depends on the future of the next gen Titan, since the Xterra and the Frontier are loosely based on its chassis.

Seeing how successful crossovers have become, investing in another body on frame SUV probably doesn't make a whole lot of financial sense. Sad news indeed.

At some point, we will lose all the actual off-road-capable vehicles due to gas mileage restrictions and budget constraints.

When will these manufacturers realize that there could still be a market for these if they'd just use small turbo-diesel engines? I'd bet the X-terra could get close to 30 with a 2-2.5L turbo diesel, even with a 6-speed slushbox.

I foresee a future where Jeeps and the like are horded and fought over like diamonds.

I really don't understand why they make the Xterra for US markets and the Patrol for the rest of the world. Simplify and consolidate already.

You are pissing into the wind, since the vast majority of "off-roaders" which are purchased, never leave the pavement.

From the manufacturer's perspective: I lose less money by ceasing production of the Xterra than I do by developing turbo diesel engine options.

That will not be a surprising news, the X-Terra was on production for what, fifteen years? I do not even sight that many in an entire year...
