Public Announcement: Engine hoists work well at pulling shrubberies. I meant to post last week when we started, but hopefully we'll get some progress this weekend.
My house has between 20-30 bushes around it, I'd say. They're those annoying pine-ish shrubberies that were all the rage around 1980. I'm not fond of them, between a) maintenance (I hate yardwork), and b) the ones next to my front damn door smell like dog shit.
My buddy's been borrowing my engine hoist for quite some time... his project cars are in worse disarray than mine. So I finally got him to bring it home, and we went at it..
Note: You need decent support under the wheels, otherwise they'll just bury themselves, along with the legs. If you use long boards, the roots won't pull up. So, I think this weekend, I'll take some 12x2 pieces and some 2x4's, nail the 2x4's to the center of the 2x12's, and grind a indent into them so the wheels will stay there, while still supporting the weight.
Oh well. I'll post pics once he sends them. My phone was dead those two days.

Something tells me you've got a welder and some scrap metal lying around...I'd pick up a couple pneumatic tires from harbor freight, and turn that engine hoist into an all terrain model...

Good plan. I don't have an engine hoist, so here's what I do. You set everything up like the picture shows, have a buddy keep the 4x4 post from tipping over, and then pull. The post helps force the plant upwards as you pull away, which makes everything easier and less messy.
