So I was talking with a few guys in my shop when the conversation quickly turned to "Dream Cars". Couple Lambo's, a Maseratti, mine being a '66 Shelby AC Cobra 427. One of them, however, said C6 Corvette. I was a little shocked because that's a completely attainable car (especially for a higher ranking individual like himself).
I asked him why he said a Corvette instead of something outlandish and crazy that we'll probably never even see in person, much less own one. His answer actually made a lot of sense to me though. He said "I love the Corvette. I've seen them, driven one, and photographed them. But as soon as I bought one, it would lose it's 'Dream Car' personality."
As soon as he said it, I started thinking. Yes, if I ever actually got a '66 Cobra I'd probably drive it every so often in the random nice days that we do get here in Alaska but for the most part, it would sit in a garage being kept safe (and away from thieving eyes). So when we think of our dream car, should that be an attainable car that we want to keep unobtainable? Or should we create a new name for the car we know we'll never be able to own but still love?

A dream car is any car that you desperately want and don't have, and you once you get it, you feel complete.

I kinda think of dream cars as something we dream of experiencing, not really owning. Who dreams of maintaining said vehicle. I just want to drive it like they say it can drive..but 65 in a cobra...cmon. I dream of cars doing their top speed, carving mountain roads. But its a dream. A reality dream car? Something I could enjoy daily. Is there a DD that could be driven for 50 years and loved the whole time? That's a dream car. I kind ofwant a 911rs america for my lifetime DD. Its what I want in everything right now.

Oh I wholeheartedly plan on getting a Cobra (kit...for obvious reasons) and driving it as much as possible. If that means I have to dress like a 40's bomber pilot to stand the cold of the winter then so be it. Me and my baby will be enjoying ourselves.

I think dream cars can actually fall into three categories "unobtanium", "if I'm lucky", and "I will own it". "Unobtanium" are cars that you love but understand you will never own. "If I'm lucky" are cars that you will get if you get the right promotion or catch the right break. "I will own it" are affordable, attainable vehicles that you love but have yet to own. My current DD is my former #1 "I will own it" dream vehicle. I can attest that it is an incredible feeling to drive everyday a vehicle that I lusted after for 17 years.
