911 probably got married somewhere in between. Given the wider hips it's probably given birth as well.

It gave birth to the Boxter and Cayman, so yes, that explains the hips. I hope it can work those off by the next generation.

TBH, 706lbs isn't all that, especially when you take into account GhostZ's post.

Think of it more like the original being an anorexic teen, with self image problems and emotional troubles (light front end, etc etc), and the newer one being the same girl after counselling, a bit of maturing, and growing up physically. She's not bare bones anymore, she has some meat to them, which people obviously like because of the amount of attention she gets whenever she walks into the room...

I actually have an ex much like that story, so it doesn't just apply to the German wrong-engined car either :)

Considering that that's over 50 years, that's not bad. The 991 is about 60kg (~130lbs?) lighter than the 997, too.

I really don't like the R35 at all. Not even the engine is particularily interesting (it's not a bad engine, but I've never been a fan of V6 engines, especially when they replace I6s).

Guys, this is ridiculous. Comparing a car's weight gain to its predecessor from 50 years ago is stupid. Obviously now there are a lot more safety regulations in check and cars have much improved technology, better engines, transmissions, and such. And many new features that are standard in most cars today weren't even around when the original 911 came out (and if they were, it was only available in the highest of luxury vehicles in the early 60s). I'm talking power locks, windows, cruise control, audio system, etc. all that stuff we seem to take for granted.

Performance wise, the new 911s are significantly faster than the old ones. That's also an unfair comparison.

This should make it into a QOTD in my opinion ... I'm pretty sure the 911 would end up among those that gained the least weight over all those years.

Honestly I think that's an amazing achievement. I would have thought it was much more. The new car has all wheel drive, power steering, ABS, AC, power everything, 1000 watt stereo, water cooling, nearly double the displacement, triple the power, a full suite of safety features and is dimentionally larger.
