I was chauffeuring my mother to her bank and to do some grocery shopping (she doesn't drive) and was going along a quiet side-street near her house, doing about 35 km/h in a 40 km/h zone. With on street parking narrowing the roadway, and with my mother in the car, it seemed a prudent speed, and besides, we were in no hurry.
Very suddenly I spot movement on the roadway near my front left tire. It was a squirrel!
"OH SHIT!" said the squirrel (or so it seemed), since it had misjudged my speed or just ran out into the road without looking. It was inches away from the wheel and a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .
"#%&^%# squirrels!" is what I thought as I braked hard for a moment, released the pedal, and steered around as much as I could without hitting the parked cars. I didn't feel a small impact and as I straightened the wheel my eyes flicked back to my driver's side mirror. The squirrel was racing towards the nearest tree.
"What was that?!?" my mother asked. "A squirrel", I answered. "So?" my mother said, "run it over!"
