Ive never attempted this kind of shot before but its pretty simple. Get a completely dark area with a dark wall. Set f stop low, and iso as low as possible, and then set your shutter speed as long as you like. Its pretty mundane, but it was neat to try it.

You said laser? As in laser, laser? STOP! Don't ever do it again! Use a flashlight next time. Using a laser can cause potential burning of the camera sensor. Once you burn it, it goes kaput & there goes your time and money. Reasons why you have to be careful when using a camera where they have lasers (i.e. lightshows, clubs, etc).

Its one of those cheap little pen lasers. But how could it cause any damage when im not even shining it at the camera. I stand behind the camera and then point the laser at the wall, 10ft from the camera. and im sure the amount of light reflected off the wall, or the potential damaging wavelengths, are highly dissipated once they hit the wall and begin to return.

Its common sense though not to shine really anything, especially a laser, directly into the lens. Thats not how i got this shot tho.

I was going to edit and say that actually, Gjon Mili beat you to it. He was the photographer who took the photos for LIFE Magazine .

That would make sense, as i dont remember picasso being famous for his photography.

Well, shit, I look like a dumbass. I apologize. Its because from what I've seen and experienced are people who actually shine the lasers (or lights) directly at the lens/camera. It crossed my mind and overlooked the part that you reflected it off a wall. Fuck :(

lol its okay. Just the theory of shining a light directly into the lens would negate the whole effect i was after entirely. I dont know of any technique that uses lights directed solely at the lense to produce a similar effect tho.

It happens.

Nice! I did some light painting a while back while I was waiting for someone. Didn't have a laser, just a key chain flashlight and my dslr. I was going for a Pac Man ghost. My artistic skills are considered questionable.

If I'm understanding correctly... there is another technique with which you can obtain similar effects by directing the light directly towards the lens, light graffiti. The photos posted by ttyymmnn illustrates the technique where you shine the light directly (facing the camera), given, you must do it in a reversed/mirrored/right-to-left (I forget which) fashion when "writing" words. I think this may be of what I was pertaining to previously of not shining lasers directly, but lights should be okay. Well yeah, Idk if I'm making any sense or if I'm understanding correctly with the latter part of your reply. It's late & I've been cramming for the past few hours, my mind is mush. So, I apologize if I make no sense. :)

ahh yes. i see how that would work. However, its not a directed style light. Its more of an emission of light. if that makes sense. Essentially in what you describe, the light acts as a glowing orb creating the 'brush stroke'. Light does in all directions. I used a laser in the dark to light up the selected area (brush stroke). light is directed to one point.

hey no worries. I respect someone who will admit they may have botched up.

now what was the procedure for shooting that one. Were you at any point in front of the camera? or was it like so:

Turn of all lights, draw figure in front of camera, get out of shot and turn on lights, end exposure?

You nailed it. My roommate was out and I couldn't find my remote shutter release. So I had to use my cable release which meant running into the dark closet, drawing, then back out to end the exposure (bulb mode) after turning on the lights. Couldn't do it in just low light because I didn't want to appear in the shot at all.

what aperture settings and iso did you run if you remember?

Ah, that makes total sense now; the type of "brush stroke."

I don't remember exactly, but I do recall that I used a higher aperture to keep some detail in the closet because its pretty deep. ISO was prolly 1600 minimum. Possibly 3200. The only flashlight I had around was really dim and the running back and forth meant a pretty long exposure, so I had to bump it up. I didn't mind the grain because it's supposed to be a ghost caught on camera parody kind of shot

This seems as good a place as any to ask for some kinja photography authorship privs. VS or Rmudkip or burner wanna hook a brother up? If you need a better sample than that quick and dirty light painting shot I can put something up when I get home in a few hours.

Nah, I can post photos, I just don't have access to much because I'm at work and the filters block out pretty much everywhere I keep pictures online. I was talking about the Photography sub-kinja page
