Hey guys. You may remember me
bitching
complaining about my car
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
but it seems to have come to a head. The little bastard is nickel and diming me to death and with 100k ticking over the clock soon (my mechanic and I think its been altered actually), this former fleet car, farm car, and my loyal city/commuter/farm car is on his last legs. So i've come here to beg, and ask the one question thats the biggest pain in the ass. What do you think i should replace it with? I've got a budget of about 10k, I currently drive between Ithaca ny and Central Ma once or twice a month to visit the Mrs, but that should end this winter (thats almost 700 miles round trip), and i like cars i can fix.
So what do you guys think? Trucks and SUVs, while beneficial for my field work, get mileage i cant really handle with those long trips. I've owned and loved a Jetta wagon, but i remember parts being expensive (and needed often). I've owned and hated a CRV, which had the same prolem (fucking 3k for a tranny). So what do you think? I live in Ithaca/Ma so snow driving is commonplace, but other than that i'm open. Halp

2000+ and up Corolla. I see them pushing 300k on a regular basis. One lady had a tiny fuel leak at the fuel rail, simple o ring fix or something, and it needed brakes. She had been so used to the car needing nothing the last ten years that she panicked and traded it in.

Subaru for sure.
I'd go with a Legacy Outback. AWD, can get a Turbo, and a 5-speed if you look hard enough, should be easy to fix, and get decent milage.
Also it holds lots of stuff.
And Wagon.

a saab 96, 99, or volvo 544.
or a diesel mazda 6 wagon
or a dodge power wagon circa 1951
but none of those are practical

a diesel mazda 6 is practical, it just doesn't exist in the US......
I think what you need is a turbo diesel miata wagon with a manual, but since that doesn't exist, have you considered the new focus or fiesta? I hear the fiesta is the same size as the first gen focus ZX3

as long as the quality has gone up, my focus is a mixed bag of great basic car and asinine FOMOCO fucking me with so much "dealer only" shit

go test drive one, a lot has changed since the dark era of 05-09
and I am saying this as someone who has driven both a fiesta and a focus

That's why they started making digital odometers so people could not roll em back.
I think some cars were just made on a Friday at quitting time, doesn't matter make or model. I've had cars that never need anything and cars that never go without needing something.
Any used car you buy you are taking a chance, even cars that have never needed anything could just start falling apart. Good Luck with whatever you do. I traded my 94 eldorado in when I couldn't go 3 weeks without something failing and bought a 2010 Camaro that has been trouble free (77k miles and counting).
