Got asked today how many miles an RX-8 can go for, and what's the most we've seen on one. I said around 150k is probably the highest mile one I've seen, but I wasn't sure if the motor was original.

Reason is a customer with 130k on his RX-8 with ORIGINAL motor came in, and it's done. No compression. Won't start. So that's not bad, right?

Spend a few grand, go another 100k. Hopefully.

Issues start happening over 100K pretty regularly, so at 130K he's done well. I'd say just throw in another engine or rebuild what he has and enjoy for another several years

Under $5k?

Motor alone retails for $3300

Mine has 94K miles and has better compression than when I bought it, oh and it was a 2004 car with the crappy flashes for the first 3 years of its life.

Just luck?

Where can you pull a new factory motor for $3,300? Even junkyard motors are going for about $2k given the high demand.

Most dealerships charge $8,500 including labor. I'm sure a rebuild from an independent shop with independent shop labor would be less, but if Mazda couldn't build the motors right, one has to be skeptical of a non-Rotary specialist rebuilding the motors...

In very isolated circumstances, an RX-8 can go for 500k miles before a rebuild is needed:

Mazda didn't extend the factory warranty to 8 years, 100k miles because they were so reliable that no issues were found - they did so to avoid a class action lawsuit.

Is the motor in the RX8 so different from the RX7? My friend had an 87 RX7 with 140k on the original EVERYTHING and it still drove perfect. Compression was spot on to

....the dealer I work for?

Yeah the labor's gonna add about a grand, plus any other work the car needs. Usually while it's out it's a good idea to change the clutch if it has one.

Luck, proper care, proper maintenance. It goes a long way.

Most owners never check the oil, or let it run for awhile after starting it cold to move it or whatever.

Fair enough, but if you're underplaying the cost of replacing a Renesis motor, you should probably make it clear that you work for a dealership and get hooked up. For the average person, a blown Renesis puts you close to the border of "Is it worth paying almost what the car is worth to replace the motor?" That's why I can see the early RX-8 being an excellent swap candidate in the future once the motors replaced under warranty start blowing. I've been meaning to bring this up as an Oppo post, but haven't had the time to do it justice by elaborating and make analogies.

Yes. Improper lubrication on the early Renesis motors and increased temperatures due to stricter emissions have led to significantly less reliability than the SA22 and FC era motors. The FD era twin-turbo motors were equally unreliable to the Renesis due to - go figure - heat related issues.

But elaborate analogies is what Oppo is for!

I'll check when I get to work, see how much we quoted the guy total parts and labor.

There was an early RX-8 on craigslist with a blown motor with the owner asking $3k, so I know a replacement is at least expensive enough that one guy didn't think it was worth fixing. And, honestly, I am okay with that. The RX-8's chassis is amazing, and a plethora of donor chassis makes it more and more likely that LSx swap kits will enter the market. :D
