I found a clean 1983 Celica hatchback 5sp for $800 about 40 minutes from me...the only issue is a broken head gasket. Worth it? I think yes, but I have no garage...

Talk me out of it before I do something to piss off my wife!

EDIT: Engine bay photos have just been emailed...all photos below for the curious.

We are Oppositelock. Reasonable NP are met with general praise. So hop to it, soldier!

Of course, a BHG is a borderline negativity.

Link ;-} ?

It sounds like a great deal depending on the condition, but I would be careful buying anything that cheap that is also that old.

Maybe its a diamond in the ruff! :-)

They're becoming uncommon, but I'd still try to talk him down. Explain to him that while you trust that the head gasket is the only problem with the car and that it hasn't been sitting for long, you don't know that. Thus, you have no idea what condition the brakes, suspension, steering, etc. parts are in. So while you want it, and promise to restore it, you need to buy it for less in order to ensure you have the money to fix whatever else pops up. A junkyard will only offer $200-300 for it, so given the circumstances, a $500 offer seems pretty reasonable. And if he declines, maybe just give him your name and number and tell him if he doesn't find a buyer, the offer is on the table.

I hope it is a diamond in the rough. He's sending me more photos later of the rust and whatnot, so we'll see.

Good advice.

I mainly want to fix the car, drive it for a few weeks, and sell it to a friend who wants an inexpensive and cool manual that we can wrench on together. This is an interesting candidate...

Haha, I'm seriously considering it. I'm waiting to see how bad the rust is...he's supposed to send me some photos.

Will do!

It's down in Culpeper, so you could always have a look if you want it; I'm not sure if I can yet.
