After !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that could possibly be wrong was that the new fuel pump I bought was faulty. Sure enough, after some extensive testing it becomes quite clear that I isn't working the way it should. After short trip in to town to trade it in for a new heavy duty pump and some new gaskets, and I'm on my way of putting it all back together. The entire fuel system has now been thoroughly cleaned and I also changed the oil because I got some coolant in the old one whilst I removed the timing chain cover.

Now that all the pieces are back in their original locations and the engine is ready to fire I thought I might share the experience with you, always exciting to see if it will work after this much fiddling with everything.
Seems to be running pretty good, but the carb's gonna need some tuning since it floods the first port after a while (probably due to that it's actually getting loads of fuel now compared to before). I'll take care of it tomorrow and take here for a test drive, let's hope it works this time!
Stay frosty!

It seems to me I recommended checking pressure on the fuel pump a while back. Now you will pay attention. :)

Yeah, yeah, details! :P And you know what? I still don't have a fuel pressure gauge *muhahahahaha*

Sounds like a marching band drum line!

But you did say it was flooding after a while... you might want to get a FP gauge on there.

That poor starter! Stop cranking after 15sec my good man.

Yeah well... that was only with the first fuel pump, didn't happen with my second one. The first pump is still kinda working but it's casting is broken so it's leaking oil everywhere... Eeehhh I've also taken the liberty of replacing the coil for the distributor, since that seemes to be the no.1 cause of this to happen, or something like that. I'm thinking that at first I had 2 minor problems, one with the pump and one with the distributor. I then traded that to one major problem with a crap pump but whilst also switching to a new coil. So by that logic, with the third fuel pump I shouldn't have any problems anymore! See?! Professional automotive detective right here!

Okay, you know what?! I did the math! So what, I held it for 16 seconds?! Can't be the end of the world can it? There's over 17 feet of fuel lines to pump fuel through, better take it all in one go.
Also, I thought GM starters were kinda unkillable?

I really hope this fixes it. It's one of the most dispiriting things having a problem with a car that just refuses to be solved.
Feels great when you crack it though.

Woohoo. Keep it up man.

Thanks! Adjusted the floats and test drove her some 20 miles earlier today. Didn't miss a beat and feels a lot more powerful compared to before.

Car just not clean or are your tailpipes burning the bumper? Good work.

Both! Never washed it ever since it was painted some 3 months ago. That black stuff around the exhaust is sot due to some unburnt fuel from when it was running poorly. I could easily wash it off but I think it adds character :P
