Best straight 6 ever built. (Barring the RB26 that is). The M88/1 is work of art.

It is high up on my list too. Right after the Rb26 and TVR Speed Six.

I don't know much about the Speed Six motor. Enlighten me. I knew it was about 350HP and 4 liters, but was it DOHC? Bore/Stroke? Redline?

I know nothing, Jon Snow.

I see your overnight'd from Japan 2JZ, and raise you a smoke-screen blow off valve.

In actuality, I've never been a huge fan of the 2JZ. Most of its advantages (that I'm aware of) over the RB26 come from the much more widely available parts, whereas the RB was pretty much a purpose-built race engine for the road.

It's like comparing a Chevy 454 with a 426 Hemi. The 454 wasn't quite as good, but could be built just as good for less and was available. The 426 Hemi though remains rare, expensive, and legendary.

It makes about 350 when it first came out, by the end it made about 405.

The engine does displace 4.0L but you could also get it in 3.6L trim if you wanted(with a higher redline of about 7200 as compared to the 6800 to 7000 of the 4.0L).

It is an alloy block and head with a cast iron crank.

It was only an 8 year run for the engine starting in 1999 and ended in 2007(with the company ).

It does infact have DOHC and 4 valves per cylinder.

Don't quote me on this, but apparently the design of the heads flowed better than the ones in the DFV V8. . . apparently. I honestly can't find any sources on this.

The engine is at a 30 degree angle so technically it is a slant six, it also has dry sump lubrication.

One of the reasons the engine was made was because the boss at the time really liked old school british sports cars.

The Speed Six is the most powerful NA inline 6 engine ever!

The engine was also used to make the almighty Speed 12 which was infact just two speed sixes sharing the same crank. That engine displaced 7.7L and made an enormous 1000hp.

And now you know!!

*production engine

OS Giken Nissan L28s can get 420+HP out of a 3 liter straight six and high compression, and that's a 40 year old motor.

But the rest of that sounds awesome.

Well is that in production trim? Cause if it is, I shall take back what I said. I have heard of people building up L28s(or was it the 24) to have insanely high redlines like 10K or something.

Nevermind, I see what you said. I meant production engine, but never put it down because you know, I be stupid.

The L24 can reach absurdly high redlines, its extremely similar to the RB26. However, it needs extremely high flowing (DOHC, instead of the stock non-crossflow SOHC heads) heads to counteract the pumping losses.

The cost of one of those engines is somewhere around $40-$50,000 if you do your own work.
