'i' swap into an 'e'? Yours then? Interesting, can't say I've seen that happen before. Maybe time to swap the cluster to match.

I have been through several clusters trying to get a set up where everything works as it should. I have one with the right tach but the odometer and fuel gauge readings are wrong and a broken turn signal. Then I have this one. I have not yet tried swapping that tach into this cluster but I'm not sure if it would work because I think the circuit boards are not the same.... Anyways this is fine for around town but when the car is ready for autox next summer I will sort out the tach so I can shift before redline.

Haha, the clusters are wonderful, aren't they? My fuel gauge is pretty random. Sometimes it works, other times it just bounces all over the place. The range function on the OBC seems to work though so I think it might just be a loose connection in or to the cluster.

It is strange how roughly around 6k it jumps from 5k back to ~3,400

4500 (~eta redline)/6500(~stock 'i' redline) = ~0.7
0.7*5k = 3500
Just a thought.

There are so many variations of the clusters!
motometer/vdo,
different numbers of led service lights
different circuit boards
different calibration pin/coding plugs
metric and imperial
325e, 318i/325i, m3 all have different redline
then there is the Racing Dynamics, Hartge, Alpina, (AC Schnitzer?) variants

Yep, I was just doing a little reading into the clusters for swapped cars and one thread mentioned changing cheap a calibration plug in the cluster and changing the face to make it work. Could be worth looking into but as you said, not that big a deal for regular driving.

Interesting maybe it jumps back at soft redline (6,250) and hits 3,500 at hard redline (6,500). Never thought of it that way.

In order to even get my cluster to work (just a couple months ago after not having one for a few years) I had to find a link to a website and search through it to find link to an unlisted subpage with the info on how to do it. Turns out you have to run jumpers from the ecu under the dash over to some of the gauge cluster inputs. I wish there was a cleaner way to do it but it is the best way I was able to find.
Sorry but I do not remember what you have, please remind me :)

1990 325i, 5mt sedan. It's a project so not driven regularly. I hope I get time to work on it this fall and winter but I'm currently 2 hours away from the car. :<

Nice. What are your plans for it? Clean it up to stock/stock+ or just fun daily driver or race car?

At least yours has a stopping point. Mine just blows right past 7k :)

Clean it up (damn Canadian climate = rust), lower it (Koni yellows and H&R Sport springs already sitting at home), new wheels and tires (15 x 7 [or 8] enkei 92s are in consideration), probably a set of sports seats and maybe a cam, exhaust and tune down the line. The plan is for it to be a daily driver in summer, stored in winter.
