With all the buzz on Brian Hobaugh's 1965 Corvette Sting Ray, I just have to add a little bit more. It is such a stunning car, and as I said in response to the /Drive video, purposeful as well. When those two things meet, it is something to behold.
So really, if you were to try and create a similar car, how would you go about doing it? Not necessarily with a 1965 Stingray, but with any old and relatively collectible car. Would you buy a beat up example and fix it, dress it up, and put life under the hood? Do you buy a moderate example and risk the "defacing" stigma that might come with it?
What the heck would you do?

Beat up example and breathe life into it. maybe leave some of it rough to add to the awesomeness. Give it some Panache. Say a 49 Caddy with a Duramax tuned to the max

Am I the only one who thinks RestoMod all the old cars? Not necessarily like the Sting Ray shown, but more like upgrade all the brakes, electricals and cooling systems? Mind you I wouldn't do that to something like a Duesenburg Super J, but I wouldn't own something like that anyway.
That being said though, an old first gen Firebird with an LSX sittin at 455ci with all the bells and whistles done to it, with a smoothed out/widened overall stance and a square tube chassis underneath and an IRS out back, full adjustable Coil overs, 6sp manual with a big old pistol grip floor shifter (to hell with a short throw, I wanna slam that baby a foot at a time) and a full awesome exhaust with dumpers so I can make that baby ROAR.
And maybe a nice sound system for those long trips. Set the drivetrain up for acceleration, but have the Viper 6th gear so I roll at 1500rpm at 70. Dual Recaros and a typical 3 point harness, and a hook up for a 5 point. I don't need to use a 5 point harness just to run and get groceries.

Oh but then again, leaving the body looking like a barn find patina with all that done underneath, yet still has Air con and power steering would be just so supremely awesome. All the other mods I listed, only the outside looks just like it's sat for 30 years.

I'm not a big fan of customized cars, but there are a few that I would hot rod/resto mod. Like most people here, I'm cool with a hot rod Volvo 240, mk 1 GTI, or e30 3 series. I'd really like to do something fun with a classic mini, like swap a bike engine. There's a local guy that did a V-TECH swap too that was done right. I've also seen rat rod minis circulating the Internet. Another cool car to hot rod would be a BMW 2002.

I go back & forth over this because an original car (that's desirable) I'd prefer to keep stock. But (there's that word again) if the original motor is long gone then I'd be all for going the restomod route.

See, I can understand keeping the original motor. That's the life blood and the heartbeat of the car.
But everything else can be improved upon. Even take the original engine and upgrade it a bit, new cams/fuel system/internals.
I am however a massive fan of N/A. Boost is addicting but I just love the idea of everything being there the moment I put the hammer down.

If I had a lot of money, I'd take a 308 and drop in the V8 out of a newer Ferrari. Maybe from a 355, 360, or even a 430.

Awesome answer. I definitely think restomods are amazing. There are certain cars, if already pristine, that shouldn't be touched much. But the rest, I think that is a sweet idea. I love patina, too.

very interesting mini there, pretty sweet. Never seen that before. I am not huge on customized cars, but when done right (a la that corvette) I love it.
I'm going to have to look more into those minis.

Check this one out, it was for sale on eBay a few months ago. The listing is still up: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Pro…
As you can see, he swapped a Yamaha bike engine which had an 11,500rpm redline into a classic Mini. There's videos on there, including one with a Gallardo...
