I really don't like the OEM tail lights. They have chrome in them, which as we know is the invention of the devil. So I was looking at these, they look very nice and clean. I don't want the lights to look aftermarket, and these fit the bill.

Much better than the chrome'd OEMs.

Chrome has a time and place on modern cars like that. The time is never. You can figure out the place.

I really like these, you can also do a red vinyl wrap on your stock ones.

Funny thing about the red vinyl wrap is that it looks more aftermarket than the aftermarket tail lights. If price was a problem this is what I would do, but since I can wait to get the more expensive things that is what I am going to do.

I like the outside part, but not the inside. The center piece of the LED looks off on the inner section, it should line up with the outer section.

Assuming that makes any sense at all...

I hate chrome taillights as much as the next guy ( the Prius C's are especially awful), and thus I've never been fond of the stock units on the Toyobarion.

However, I can excuse them, because nod to history:

Anyway, the Tom's (the ones you posted) look not bad, and not too aftermarket-ricey.

I like them a lot, but mostly on BRZs, the LED strip matches up almost perfectly with the DRLs on the Subaru.

I'm going to hold off and see what is available in a year or so, gotta get all my go-fast bits before buying cosmetic upgrades :)

Kinja'd!!!0

I totally want go fast bits, but a lot of them are expensive, like brakes and wheels :(

I am also a bit of chicken to replace the headers because I think once I put them on, the engine will fail and my car will be a piece of junk.

Kinja'd!!! Decay buys too many beaters > YSI-what can brown do for you

Kinja'd!!!0

Well, with Scion technically they need to determine that the headers would be the cause of the failure to deny warranty coverage. Headers are probably me next big ticket purchase (once nameless releases it), or possibly the Openflash tablet (but that would totally void the powertrain warranty).

Kinja'd!!! B_dol > YSI-what can brown do for you

Kinja'd!!!0

Usually I think a taillight swap is the quickest way to waste money and make a car look like trash. TOM's however, look pretty good. That being said, I made a pact to only spend money on my FR-S that increases performance and handling.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > B_dol
09/15/2013 at 22:00

Kinja'd!!!0

I only want performance oriented things too, but I don't want to over do it within the warranty. So after exhaust(full), suspension, wheels, and brakes I am probably done for a few years(like 2 or so). This though, I think looks very nice and won't void my warranty!

Are you waiting on nameless because they make quality stuff, or is it for another reason? I heard Perrin might be making one, lets hope they make UEL one for people like me. I am sure nothing would happen by installing headers, it is just removing the exhaust from the engine.

Also, I heard ECUtek always to reflash to stock and no one is the wiser.

Kinja'd!!! Decay buys too many beaters > YSI-what can brown do for you

Kinja'd!!!0

ECUtek leaves traces no matter what (it's what shows that you have an ECUtek "license"), that's the main reason I'm going with a more open solution. Openflash tablet gives the end user unlimited access to the rom file and any tunes done, where ECUtek encrypts the file and does not allow the end user to access it. It's also about 2-300 cheaper and it saves an exact back up copy of the factory rom for later re-flashing.

Perrin as far as I know, have abandoned their header program.

And the reason I'm waiting for nameless is +~45 ft/lbs at the wheels in the torque dip and +~22 WHP at the top end, which is by far the best numbers I've seen. Also I met up with Jason from nameless on Friday to pick up my front pipe, he says there may be some "interesting" stuff coming out for us N/A guys in the coming year. (god, I hope it's ITBs) And the welds on that front pipe from them are ART! So I'm pretty much sold on these guys.

22whp? Jezzz. If the make a UEL header I am sold. Although I might go with JDL because they also make some quality stuff, plus they look damn sexy.

Kinja'd!!!

I am researching as much as I can about headers(so nothing goes wrong) and all I can say is. . . Ignorance is bliss. Seriously, everyone is talking about cats will lower life expectancy, same with no heat coating, it is like why didn't I just buy them and just put them on. Then I wouldn't have to worry about such things, they probably don't even make a difference(the coating at least).

I probably won't be doing an ECU tune for a while, just cause of warranty issues. Although, I have no idea what I exactly want. That will probably come after an air intake, wheels, headers, oil cooler, and radiator. . . basically after everything.

Unfortunately, they will not be making a UEL header (or even a catted header for a while) their company motto is function/form (seriously, it's written on a beer koozy they gave me with my front pipe), and a well designed EL header will always outperform a UEL (but without that sound).

Here are two of their prototypes...

Kinja'd!!!

And the most recent (and the one I'm hoping to install on my car)

Kinja'd!!!

and a Dyno

Kinja'd!!!

I think I may go with a tune sooner than expected just to prevent the high rpm detonation issue that cooks DI seals on the stock tune. But first, I bought a knock off copy of techstream (toyota's ecu communication and diagnostic program) and I'm going to see if my ECU is running the most recent firmware, which already has a fix built in. Unfortunately, there is still no TB out to upgrade people running 2012 and early 2013 ECUs.

I have heard that too. I think you can go to a dealership and ask for the newest ECU updates. . . probably. I would try it out, see if they will let you so you don't have to get an ECU tune just to protect your engine.

Let us begin the great UEL and EL debate!!!

From my understanding, although EL's make more power at the top end, UEL tend to make more torque throughout the rev range. Like the torque dip, it is nearly gone with a UEL set up(in the Nameless dyno it looked like it moved a bit). But all dynos I have seen are so very inconsistent, like some have full exhaust + tune, others are just the headers. Here is a UEL header dyno, it has a tune that is why it is making power up top. Also Ft86speedfactory loves the UEL design, they say it makes more power, but I don't believe that.

As a rule, when looking at dyno graphs, I pay absolutely no attention to the numbers, I only consider the deltas. I like UELs for the possibility of less total piping and thus less overall mass, but contrary to most people I prefer the sound of EL headers. To me they just sound more like a racey "Porsche esque" boxer than the Subaru UEL "rally" sound.

I've also heard the same thing with the power curve when comparing EL to UEL headers. For my driving, I do not give a damn about how it does under about 3.5K (as long as it can drive relatively comfortably lol) I ideally want all my power to start in around 4K, because that is about as low as my revs get during "spirited" drives. And on the nameless headers, all that extra torque would help me out a lot on corner exits.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > Decay buys too many beaters

I never really paid attention to dynos until I got this car and decided to start modding it, so I am pretty much new to this whole thing. If it sounds like I am not an expert, that is because I am not. Also by deltas are you referring to the change in the graph?

I with the other group that loves the UELs because it sounds more muscular, actually sounds like it has more displacement. I am not big on the 4 cylinder sound, not enough punch behind it(if that makes any sense). If this was a flat 6, then I would have gone EL no questions asked, those sound sexy.

That was also my thoughts about the torque curve, was corner exit. While autocrossing particularly, because you can drop down to 3.5K and the car will become really slow. Same with backroad driving.

I am referring to the difference between the stock (usually) line and the modified line, but I'm also far from an expert.

I guess it all comes down to personal preference as far as the sound goes. Around me in the Pacific North West, the Subaru Burble is really overplayed. In fact behind the Prius they are probably one of the most common cars I see. I've always been a fan of how small displacement sounds, like as in bikes and well tuned hondas. The key to avoid the raspy "fartcan" style sound is to be sure you have at least 1 resonator (my eventual system will have 2) and have a cat.

Kinja'd!!! YSI-what can brown do for you > Decay buys too many beaters
09/16/2013 at 17:14

Kinja'd!!!1

Yeah that was what I meant(I swear) I just didn't word it properly.

Around me, there aren't many Subarus and even less loud ones. So when I do hear the rumble I love it! Although, I can understand the hate for them, many are owned by hooligans that like backwards baseball hats and energy drinks. . . I am not big on that crowd either.

I hope I don't have rasp, I am going to have 1 cat and 1 resonator(in the catback which is actually really good) which should stop any gross sounding exhaust noise. Hopefully, all the videos on youtube point to good results.

Kinja'd!!! Decay buys too many beaters > YSI-what can brown do for you
09/16/2013 at 17:23

Kinja'd!!!0

I'm going to have 2 helmholtz resonators, one on the front pipe and one on the mid pipe. They should cut rasp and drone while not affecting the sound level at WOT conditions (I like it loud as hell when I step on it) . Plus since they operate in parallel to the exhaust stream rather than in line, they should offer absolutely no additional resistance to the flow.

And yeah, we get a lot of the backwards hat, party tank, monster energy, ken block wannabe, dudebros here as well... I try to distance myself from that scene.
