And I just realized how you're supposed to race slot cars. So much frustration in my youth. So little reward.

Kinja'd!!!

Hint: you aren't supposed to just go flat out until your car flies off the track.

Well, I was often in doubt in my youth. Thus, I went flat out.

HA! I did the same as a kid and watched a show might have been James May's Toy Stories or whatever its called. in which some guy was racing slot cars and slowing down in the corners! Revelation. Now I want to try it out again.

It depends which side of the problem you decide to tackle. You can either try to finesse the controller, or you can try to build tracks you can race round without ever coming off. Or, you can use the straights propped up on piles of stuff to see how far you can fire a car out of a third floor window.

Number three had it when I was a kid.

I assume it's bad then if I picked up on that when I was 5 years old? Everyone always said I matured fast...

When in doubt, or flinging a slot car around a track....

Pfft, that's what those snap on plastic guard rails are for.

I used to set mine up just perfect so I could go flat out, all the time.

I bought an AFX set for my boys two Christmases ago. The transformer has three power settings, and at the lowest you can keep the throttle wide open and the cars will stay on the track. It's good for the little kids (or grown ups) who can't get off the gas in the turns. Of course, my boys also enjoy turning the transformer to high and flinging the cars off at every turn. Unfortunately, the grips are really cheap, and not very sensitive.

Damn! Where can I get one of these still in good condition with all the parts? It seems like every time I see one, it's missing at least half the track or the cars or both!

The AFX G-Plus cars from my youth were almost impossible to fling off the track, thanks to the magnets on the bottom. The worst I remember them doing is sliding sideways juuust far enough that they'd lose contact with the rails. So much fun :)
