Slightly used GTI, or more used 128i?

Depends what you need out of a DD. For me it would be GTI, but I need space to carry somewhat large objects.

need more info. 128i owner here

GTI.
I don't wish VANOS or HPFP shenanigans on even my worst enemies.

Assuming it's a four-door: GTI.
If you don't need practicality get the 128i.

I am in sales and commute. The Mrs has a Golf for when we need to transport things.

Is that a thing for the base, N/A 3.0? I'm not talkin about the turbo 4.

VANOS only for the NA. VANOS and HPFP on the turbo.
Its been a while since I have dived into the BMW issues.

For reliability, repair cost, gas and probably insurance, the GTI.
But car buying decisions aren't always purely logical. Drive both, buy what you like.

I6, no fancy M parts. It's a hypothetical. No actual car.

Me too. I generally don't enjoy them. But I saw one today, and it was hard to deny the appeal.

I meant more along the lines of is this a daily? Do you have a family? is this your only car?

I'm about to get married. No kids yet. The fiancé has a 4dr golf if we need something more practical.

I have a irresponsible desire to get a E92 in a few years.
Its stupid. Even if the prices are reasonable now.
Its such a bad mistake. I'd probably get murdered on repairs.
But there is a desire to own something like that.

I just see too many of the wrong kind of people driving them. It's a car ruined by its average customer.

in that case, 128 it is!!

Good news is that all the cocks are migrating to Audi.
The M4 will draw some cocks back however.

That's a shame because I actually really like Audi...

All the Audis I see these days are owned by trust fund 20 year olds.
Not that I have anything against them, their cars or their wealth; the overwhelming majority however just act like douches.
That makes me sad.

Yeah, this.

I'd probably still lean GTI, but I'm a sucker for hatches, and I have to imagine maintenance is cheaper on the GTI.

BMW all the way. Not that I'm biased or anything. eyes shift over to the rusty Neue Klasse in my garage

What year GTI are you looking at. If a MKV I'd suggest 09 and later. They started using the TSI engine halfway through 09, and that's the engine you want. Flat torque curve all the way to redline, timing chain instead of belt and some other goodies I can't recall. I bought an 09 2 years ago and it has been trouble free, just hit 60k miles.
The 128i will be a more capable performance car probably, but the GTI in my view is the perfect all around car. Good mileage, excellent handling (for FWD), seats are amazing, and tons of room. Probably a bit cheaper to maintain as well.

It would be a 10-12. So MkVI.

They are a good choice. The styling is far superior on them compared to the MKV.

GTI! Get the four-door, too. The b-pillar isn't huge, and it's easier to put stuff in the back if needed.

FWIW: the HPFP issues were only for the N54 twin turbo engine (on early 335i's mostly), the recalls/factory have fixed these. The effect is issue is gone, but the price on the older n54 335i coupes is a bit artificially depressed by that (and the early iDrive on the 07-08 models). But the engine is widely viewed as underplayed by BMW for how much power it was actually putting out. The awesome 1M Coupe uses this engine for example. I believe Cobb has an accessport for it as well.
Vanos- mostly a E46 issue (not the later N52 engines in the E90 series), especially the M cars of that era. The E46 M3's have multiple issues to look out for (vanos/subframes/bearings ect), so careful research and preventive maintenance is required .
If anything with all the Cocks buying Audi's (a shame, love the S4 and S5), and BMW going softer and mass market with the current generation (and putting all their R&D money in the stupid i car series), the E90 generation (especially the coupes) are the last real driver's BMW. Get one now while good low milage versions are still thick on the ground.
FWIW- the BMWCCA is a great club too, with probably the best magazine of them all (the Roundel).
