how hard is it to remove a speed governor from a car?

I won't be doing it, as I don't enjoy incarceration, but I am curious.

Mine was removed when I tuned (or "chipped" as some call it) the car

short answer; easy with an "if". Long Answer; hard with a "but"

Need more info.

1988 Mercedes 3.0L I6, just for the fun. Apparently it'll do over 135 without the chip.

Not that I would do that.

I'd love to chip my car but I don't know if anyone does these cars.

Most cars, pretty easily. I'm not sure why you would be incarcerated for doing it...

Not very if you have a chip or some sort of piggy-back software installed. I have upgraded software on mine car and it stripped the speed limiter and bumped the redline. I can't imagine I'll ever need to go that fast but apparently I could hit a little over 150mph in my E46 now.

I'm not sure removing the speed limiter is in any way illegal, at least in the US. At least not any more illegal than tuning it.

Its just a matter of how it was implemented and if anyone has cracked the code.

Doing 136 MPH will get you incarcerated in most places.

Depends on the type of governor. Most are a chip, which is easy enough to replace or reprogram. Some are mechanical though, but those are rare.

What do you have? 2.8 V6 A4? If so, there's a couple companies that offer a tune, not much gain but governer and some timing advance will net a few Hp. If it's a 1.8t and not already chipped, do it. Best bang for your buck mod on that car. I gained almost 40hp on my old 1.8t with just the tune.

all depends what kind of car. Computerized governors can typically be removed with a reflash of the PCM/ECM/Whatever you call that computer. I won't do it for somebody I consider immature... I need to believe they are only removing it for track racing.

Easy, just throw him or her out of your car. :)

I'd imagine it's only illegal if you see if it is still there

Just because you remove the limiter doesn't mean you have to do the maximum speed... even with a limiter in place you can get yourself arrested for speeding.
