I keep eying this one available locally:

If it weren't ridiculously impractical, it would be tempting.

Get a Corvair.

Buy it. Then make a shirt.

Unfortunately not. I imagine that one could be quite the handful, 500 hp or not.

Damn. Good point. I still don't have a Porsche design.

Not a big fan of the Corvair, unfortunately. Also, I'm fairly sure I'd have a very hard time finding one not rusted to bits cheaply in my part of the world. Hell, the little 914 was a big enough surprise.

I have one in Ohio, if you want it. Creamcicle '74 2.0, in need of paint, and... Probably lots of things. It's been sitting under a cover in a hangar for longer than I want to think about. No vinyl, no shitty exhaust tips, set up by the previous owner for autox.
I'm sure my pops would enjoy its absence. Not joking.

I've never understood the appeal of 914s. IMHO I think their sorta ugly, throw in the slowness and they have no appeal for me. I'd rather have a 2002 or a Datsun

Just got my 1.7 on the road. Not a lot of horsepower but I love it.

Sweet. It's brown too.

Access to the engine is pretty horrendous though, although I'm sure the 4-cyl will be better than the 6.

There's a lot of people who chop out part of the floor in the back and replace it with a tube frame so they can get at it easier.

Other than that they're pretty damn good.

Check for rust near the jackstands, battery tray, below the battery tray and under/behind the rocker panels.

I would expect that as well. There is the odd clean car out there and this could be one of them but yeah, rust is something you always have to be ready for here.

Ohio might be a bit far for me but thanks for the offer. My dad already laments my e30 project enough as it is. I don't think he'd appreciate me taking up more space in the shop with a 914 :)

I was never a huge fan either but seeing a cheap one in what is apparently not in Ontario-so-rusted-to-hell condition does add quite a bit to the appeal for me.

Here's a photo of what it looked like before the fiberglass fixing (the chin spoiler was cracked by the PO) dent repair, and rear trunklid refit (never sat right, so I took it off and replaced part of the hinge and re-seated it):

Kinja'd!!!

Mileage is.... I don't remember. I think something in the 80-90K range? Though I could be way off on that. Been a looooong time since I've seen the interior. It's been parked for over a decade at this point (time, money, distance, excuses excuses). I also have a set of fiberglass rockers to replace the super-dented originals, a good cover, some braided stainless brake lines, installed short shifter, and the last set of orange side decals that Pelican Parts made. Price: what sounds reasonable?

No idea, honestly. I've just been lusting over a sort-of-runs 635CSi Euro nearby, and the 914 is another car I think is super cool. Has it been in covered storage, or sitting out? Did it run when parked?

I'll do some research and get back to you on that; I kind of doubt my wife will go for it anyway, but she'd love one if I could restore it.

It's been in an insulated, sometimes heated hangar, under cover. Ran great when parked (love that phrase). Had shaved tires for autox on it (kinda too sticky for the amount of chassis flex, honestly, but that's what the PO had on it). The interior is in excellent, excellent shape, forgot to mention. It has the center gauge stack, which I think was standard on the creamcicle/bumblebee cars. Tach is mounted so that redline is at 12:00, and Blaupunkt head unit (the radio's worthless, though. Stock speakers).

Awesome.

Mind emailing me some photos/details sometime soon? My email is josh.pidek at gmail.com. I'd want to get a look at it/run the VIN before making an offer, which buys me time to do some research on fair values. I don't know much about the values on 914s, honestly, although that one looks absolutely amazing.

Well, it doesn't look that amazing on the outside, now. It's been prepped for paint, which I never got to. I'll see if I can find some papers for it when I get home. I've got a few pics of it around, I'll scan what I can find. It's in Ohio, and I'm in California, so I can't just go out and snap some new ones. Title's in my dad's name now, so he can sell it if anyone's interested. Where are you? (also, yeah, we can take this offline— email's ryan at my user name dot com)

I'll email you later today.
